I believe this. As someone who live severely disabled from Fibromyalgia and a host of other issues involving chronic pain, I have experienced this many times.

John Belushi, an old SNL cast member and comedic actor, once performed a skit demonstrating this principle.
A patient complained of low back pain, so, Belushi as the doctor, stubbed out a lit cigar on his hand. Then asked him, "How's that pain, now?"

This happens with childbirth too. Some women clench combs so that the prongs are going into their palms and taking pain away from other areas.

I think Emotional pain can be very motivating to get yourself to try crazy high risk physical activity, a fine line though

Growing up with those friends.. yep! Re the pain, for me, doing somethig to "distract" the brain, like rubbing my feet" it helps to lessen pain so I can deal with it.

Not only does this work but it was a part of growing up.
If one was on the receiving end, not only was there the secondary pain, but the onslaught of brief emotions immediately following the action such as, disbelief, "I can't believe I just fell for that", anger, humor, etc.
The distraction seemed to render the original pain less significant/Easier to overcome.
Oddly, the irreverence (done in jest) in many cases seems more effective than showing empathy or placating.

That's why instead of cutting you can do sports or take a cold shower or work on a daunting task.

Reduce suffering through suffering. Merry Christmas.

This is what I did when I had my first period. I did over 100 sit-ups and said “I decide where I get to hurt”

So how to address reason for the original pain?
There's a reason there is pain to begin with instead of ignoring it.

Same if you get in the tub and the water's too hot, you turn on the cold water and touch it while you're sitting in the tub and you'll be able to stand the hot water
