Oh, I didn't know that. I worked for a company that discouraged it, and you couldn't talk about your raises either. They passed me up for a promotion for someone else in a different area of the company who knew nothing about that position. The only reason they could give for passing me over was HR pulled their matrix out and looked at assessments I took nearly 10 years earlier when I hired on at the company. I decided I didn't want assessments held against me for the rest of my life, so I changed companies 😂

I worked for a fortune 500 company in California that published all job descriptions and the salary range for each. It was the healthiest environment I've worked in. Raises were based on measurable and achievable goals and everything was laid out in detail so we had a great shot at achieving them. It wasn't perfect, but it was great for achievers. America has devolved back to the 70s.

WA recently passed a law requiring job postings to include a pay range and its been mostly awesome for all the workers. It kind of sucks that we have to wait till a job is posted to see what the pay should be for all the people already working that job, some people have outdated job-titles that will never be rec'd again presumably because their pay isn't in-line with similarly situated workers. It used to be that you didn't even know if a "promotion" would include a pay bump until after you interviewed and received an offer

One of the first things my manager said to me was something along the lines of, "Don't tell anyone what you're getting paid or talk about anyone else's pay with them or you could be terminated." I didn't know at the time that this was totally illegal. The only reason he would have to say this is manipulation and/or deception. What other possible reason would he have to demand pay secrecy? I've heard other employees say they were told the same thing. Major red flag.

Why would I? I know damn well I’m paid the least because I’m the new guy. It’s still 60% more than what my old job paid, and that’s all anyone needs to know. I’m not gonna go starting a fight just to find out the guy who started the year before me makes 2 or 3 k more than I do. So what? Good for him, but how’s that gonna help me do my job?

Even if it was illegal to discuss your wage with others…just do it anyway- away from the job site and off any related job platforms.
