Deep sea vampire squid. With a Latin name literally meaning Vampire Squid from Hell, it’s easy to imagine this deep-sea dweller as a nightmarish monster. But suspended at depths of up to 900 metres, this curious cephalopod is neither a squid nor a bloodsucker. It belongs to its own order, called Vampyromorphida. Named after its [blood-red colour and] webbed arms that resemble a cape, Vampyroteuthis a passive suspension feeder, consuming sinking particles of decaying matter and fecal pellets that it captures with long, filamentous tentacles. When threatened, it turns itself inside out in what’s called the ‘pineapple posture’, exposing intimidating spines called ‘cirri’ to deter predators. But again, it’s all for show. If that fails, they expel a cloud of shimmering bioluminescent material, and vanish into the depths once more.

i remember those from endless ocean 2 for the nintendo wii! when you poked them, they ejected basically luminous squid-ink, and yeeted themselves off into the distance. what a great game that was.

"This organism has two long retractile filaments, which distinguish it from both octopuses and squids, and places it in its own order, Vampyromorphida, although its closest relatives are octopods. As a phylogenetic relict, it is the only known surviving member of its order." "In biogeography and paleontology, a relict is a population or taxon of organisms that was more widespread or more diverse in the past. A relictual population is a population currently inhabiting a restricted area whose range was far wider during a previous geologic epoch. Similarly, a relictual taxon is a taxon (e.g. species or other lineage) which is the sole surviving representative of a formerly diverse group."

Thank you for dispelling myths that bestow bad reputations to creatures based solely on human biases and beliefs! Nature is much more wondrous and amazing than we can imagine...and your videos help show that!

What a great shorty. The narration is spot-on for he seemingly sinister creature of the depth. The editing isnalso superb; cramming in the info but with creative flair. The opening shot of its eye really captured my attention, but the the ending micro- “vidella” of the threat and it’s astonishing escape is really well done. I know this may seem like you got your mom to critique your work but I’m just a random fella that can appreciate a nicely crafted video and don’t mind pointing it out. Thanks for for all your work to give me sixty seconds of rad footage that is also skillfully packaged.

As harmless as it may be you can't blame someone for assuming it's some kind of demon based just upon its looks alone.
