After studying psychopathy from my armchair for 12 years or so after attending the School of Hard Knocks -- the same reason I'm subscribed to both Scott and The Behavior Panel's channels -- I can add to Scott's answer. (It's kind of a weird feeling because I have so much respect for Scott and his knowledge.)

We know how psychopaths like to be in control, whether as crooks or captains of industry or Judges, etc., or as crooks IN positions of control.

We know that, at some point growing up, they figure out they're not like everyone else. As they develop their superiority complex, people with normal human emotion begin to look inferior to them.

We also know that all psychopaths are narcissists, and that the majority of the people narcissists surround themselves with are considered "supply" -- that's actually the psychological term for it -- we might supply adoration or funds or housing or sex or whatever. (Remember, even r*PE is about control -- not s*x.)

I think the crimes of psychopaths are all about getting their supply by controlling us and using WHATEVER emotion they can draw out of us in order to feel that control -- and to feel superior to the rest of us.

My mother regularly told me that I was naive and people would take advantage of that. But I saw the good in people and gave them the benefit of the doubt too easily,

I was too trusting and didn't figure out what Mom meant until I was about 50! Now in my 60s, without giving too much of my book angle away, I'm writing about them and the kinds of games they like to play with us, whether we're aware of those games (or cons) or not.
