The thing about those cables though, is that they tend to be reliable, comparatively speaking that is. If you're going to put something on the ocean floor you're generally going to try and make it so you don't have to haul it back up again too soon.

As somone who made his Phd on this topic: don't worry, there are enough boats. Plus every cabel in the video was a power cabel, not data cabel.

Lol i worked at Oceaneering which made some of the umbilicals he showed which were for oilfields.
Most of the real cables are fiber optic though some are copper with repeaters.

Alarmist AF. We can easily build more ships if and when we need them, also the protocols used by the internet are incredibly robust and will just reroute traffic some other way.

I remember reading way back when starlink was first proposed. One of the reasons for it was its faster than cables and the main driver for faster conections world wide is the stock markit and thier want to be able to make the trades as gast as posible

That's the problem with most infrastructure. I work As a lineman and most of our overhead and underground lines that are out there now were originally built in the '50s to the '80s. A lot of the work that we do is just line maintenance, like reconducting the line and putting up new wire and other stuff like that. The trade skills are full of aging men who will retire in the coming years, young men need to take up the role. But at least in America high schools has pushed the idea of college being the only way to get a good job and live comfortably.

The danger to these cables every year is generally during fishing season in the shallower locations. SMW-3 and SMW-4 get damaged every year, and there are multiple others that you can set your own watch by.

Satellite can be used for some global communications like the military utilized the SWAN system. We literally used this system from Camp Lejeune to OCONUS Japan and Turkey.

We also have satilites and many objects in space we can bounce and transfer info/internet through.
