Written by Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry during the bands 1982 Escape tour, the lyrics were inspired by the painful divorces that band members Neal Schon and Ross Valory were going through at the time, with lyrics describing a couple who have to separate, even though they still care for each other.
The song was heavily inspired by Motown beats of the past and was thrown into random live sets to gauge audience interest, as the band was unsure about ever releasing it on an album. The song would go on to peak at number 8 on the Billboard chart.
