That's why in CPR training, you physically point to someone and say call 911

I used to teach Active Shooter and Emergency Response training in retail stores. One of the first things we taught the managers was the necessity to assign roles and functions to individuals during a crisis to avoid the "bystander effect."

I just talked to my son about this yesterday because he saw something dangerous and I asked him if he called 911 and he said nah someone else will probably report it. Don't be that person . be the person who does something

I was in a bad car accident in the middle of an intersection. I expected everyone to run over to help. At least 1-2 minutes passed and no one had even got out of their car, I was first out of my car to go check if other people were ok. I was collapsing on side of the road by the time anyone did anything .

I e stopped at several rollovers in Denver and Las Vegas to help. Iā€™ve worked pm shifts and often drive late at night. Thing is, lots of people donā€™t want to talk to police or first responders. People who are illegally here to those who drive without insurance. One time I found a girl with a broken back. She said 6 cars had driven past her upside down car while she was pulling herself out. ( she then walked about 20 yards too, tough girl )

Nope, I always call and go out while on the phone. The worse thing that happens is they tell you they are aware of it.

Learned about this in Boy Scouts for my First Aid merit badge. When helping in an emergency situation, designate specific roles to specific people.

Call out the appearance of a bystander like a shirt color or hat. If people are called out, they will feel more responsible to help

Yup Iā€™ve missed out on billion dollar business ideas because Iā€™ll have the exact same thought, ā€œnah someone else is probably already doing thisā€ I was launching Airbnb 2 years before Airbnb was even conceptualized. Stopped doing it due to that exact thought.

Everyone worldwide needs to realize we have to help eachother. YOU have to take action! Never assume someone else is going to do it; when youā€™re in that position Think About How Everyone Else Is Assuming Someone Else Will Help, And NO ONE DOES/WILL.

Exactly !! This is why as a life saver we would point to one person and ask them to go call for help and get back to you once they have Now with everyone holding a phone šŸ“± I would imagine things are different ā€¦ keep it simple ā¤

I was on an air show committee and there was a fatal accident. In the debrief we found out no one called 911. I always call when I see accident now!

This happened at my friend's wedding. A guy was choking and i realized the people close to him were just staring and I had to rush over. He was actually pissed at them for not doing anything

It was after this very situation that I was taught to scream "FIRE!!!" rather than "HELP!!!" People will always come to see a fire.

I feel blessed and at times a lil burdened, im not impervious to bystander affect but i do resist it, having seen it at about 7-8yo i got into fitness and MMA with freinds, i got a job in the activities and enviromental services of the local hospital/LTC And from there at around 18 yo i feel i set a steady rate of response that is within my limitations

Having watched videos on this effect, I happened to be confronted with a situation in a drug store (pharmacy) where the lady in front of me was getting worked up with the pharmacist. She walks up to the older gentleman, grabs him by the front of his shirt, yanks it down to her face and starts yelling at the man. Nobody else was stepping in (the store had no security guards), so I walked up to the lady (shorter and heavier than me) and stayed out of her punching zone as I'm relatively small and lean. I told her to back off and pick on someone her own size (hilarious in hindsight). LITERALLY no one (about 10 bystanders) came to help me. She charged at me and I dodged a half swing from her. Her husband stopped the full swing as he grabbed her arm and starting pulling her towards the exit. She was yelling and cussing the entire time. Moral of the story, I'd never put myself in that situation ever again. I've got a special needs child and wife who depend on me.
