The "gates opened, people got super powers, our MC's the weakest, but they need money for sick family" opening feels like the modern day version of "it was a dark and stormy night"

Best guess: mangas are at constant risk of getting axed by publishers so it's best to stick to the tropes you know everyone loves instead of getting too experimental.

Great modern day fantasy is Ancient magus bride. Goes off of many different kinds of folklore that's based in different areas. I'm not sure if it's like DnD but it's def a great story about the main character learning to live and it goes through many different depressing/dark story lines

Probably because they grew up in the era where Sci-Fi stories were the majority of manga, hell the inspirations like Dragon Ball also had Sci-Fi themes.

As a future mangakka I gotta say, I have a few stories planned and yes, only one of them is not fiction, and kinda not fiction.
Some mangas obviously are inspired by others, like MHA. But then you just come up with a concept of sci-fi and use something else as a base of inspiration, like probably kaiju 8 and any movie/series that has kaijus, but the concept that revolves around it is a human kaiju

Tbh im down for more mangakas to try their hands at sci-fi if it gives us a chance at getting more good sci-fi manga/anime, there isnt enough of it

My favorite anime (pfp related) is Toward The Terra. Its a space opera from 2007 but based on a manga from the 80s and you can tell. Its sci-fi, beautifully ethereal, and I need to rewatch it sometime this next month.

Its because those tropes sell the most, and if a mangaka doesn't sell the best, they get axed by publishers.

Weirdly, while not anime, FNAF is oddly like this. It began as a pretty basic haunt of vengeance story, but soon shit like Sentient AI, robot people, and fucking possession giving you superpowers happened.

Over the course of 10 years i might add

It’s weird because I also agree heavily that the extremely common anime tropes is holding a lot of anime back.

But Frieren beyond journeys end Is genuinely a top tier anime to me.

Partly because I feel like it’s made the way it is so it can take advantage of its setting while most of this troupe stuff is using tropes to take advantage of the audienve

Many are probably Star Wars and Star Trek fans who loke space and stuff but wanted to get more experience before going that large. Dragon ball started out fantast and went hard into space ajd science for a while.

considering that a lot of mangakas like kishimoto grew up in the 80s, with smash hits like akira and star wars being massive influences, its actually kinda a no brainer. even dbz, often cited as a massive inspirations for that generation of manga authors, has lots of scifi elements. so it makes sense when you think about it from that lens. however a lot of fantasy/supernatural manga are actually easier to understand and write for from an audience perspective, as lot of these manga use shinto/buddhist stories in some way or rely on common ideas taken from tolkien/dnd that most people are familiar with and hence forth a lot less exposition needs to be done in order to convey to your audience how these things function or what they might be in your story. a dragon is a dragon, a ghost is a ghost, but when you think of aliens, its a lot less clearly defined.

I can tell from talking to a few in the industry its complicated. A lot have previous work or unpublished concept that they couldn't use in the story. Other don't like the idea of being called a one trick artist so they want to prove or challenge themselves by working on a different genre.

The point of Isekaing someone is the audience learns about the world along with the MC make the world different.
