don't forget that apple gets a cut on third party lightning cables or peripherals if they use usb c instead they sort of don't have as hard a grasp on the third party market.

A thing to remember. Apple sells the cheaper non pro model with the slower USB 2.0 standard. A newer USB 3.0 standard is up to 20x the speed.
The usb 2.0 is only used for pc pheripherals like mouse and keyboard. These are also what cheap android phones have(sub 300$).
It takes 5$ to have a newer processor to have the better speeds but apple didnt do it for thier lower end models. This is literally 1984

And they did it in the most Apple way possible. Unless you get the Pro Max, you're stuck at Lightning transfer speeds - AKA, USB 2.0, which was introduced nearly 15 years ago.
So by getting rid of the exclusivity and making people buy cables that Apple gets a cut of the profit from even if they don't make them, they found a way to encourage people to spend more money on their overpriced devices.
