The Friendly Rapper Scam Exposed!

In the fake rapper and CD scam, friendly "rappers" often approach unsuspecting tourists, handing them seemingly free music CDs with the guise of promoting their work. Once the tourist accepts the CD, the scammer demands payment for the ostensibly personalized or autographed disc, employing aggressive tactics to coerce money from victims.

These days, the scammers hand out QR codes that link to Apple Music and expect a tip!

They're literally selling you a QR code, which is just a link to an album on Apple Music. It's not an album download that you can keep. Without an Apple Music subscription, you can only listen to samples of the songs. The tourist gets nothing, and they probably feel pressured into tipping.

This scam is found in Times Square, New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

I might not have explained it well enough, but they're literally selling you a QR code, which is just a link to an album on Apple Music. It's not an album download that you can keep. Without an Apple Music subscription, you can only listen to samples of the songs. The tourist gets nothing, and they probably feel pressured into tipping.

I actually met a guy selling his CDs in NYC at Times Square when I visited on a school trip in 2004. His name was Yorel and he actually still makes music, the CD was actually really good and had it in rotation for a long time until I lost the disc. So its a shame that people like this give all artists a bad name.

This happened to me in West Virginia of all places. I was on my last $20 and a guy approached me saying they were giving out CD’s of their cousin’s music who passed away, and that donations were accepted for his funeral. When I told him all I had was $20 he said “well there’s an ATM inside”. I felt bad for the cousin who passed away and I am a musician myself so I went and got my last 20 and gave it to the guy. Popped in the CD and it was 10 tracks of complete silence.

Fell for this in LA a few years ago. They do this at Venice Beach and then pressure you for a "donation"

Damn they finally updated to QR codes?? I remember when physical CDs were shoved into people’s hands and then they’d ask you for money since you “took it”

I was thinking it was worse like a QR code that hacks into your phone or server or worse, data capture & money for ransomed photos… man what a time to be alive.

Even offering to score you weed is a scam, as cannabis is legal in the state of NY.

Once upon a time, a great Sage said "Nahi Chahiye Ji" and walked off. You should learn from that legendary sage Karlacharya.
