How is it that 6 royal dukedoms,
and 24 non-royal dukedoms can equal a total of 35 dukedoms?

More of this please! Would love to know the origins and meaning of past and maybe even present names for Government, and role they played in government.

One might add that from the 16th century onwards many people even of relatively low status were created dukes for their military merit. Dukedoms are closely related with the military like everything of the sword-nobility, since they were created by Edward III to give the royal family way more power without weakening the nobility

The danish equivalent is Hertug, pronounced like "Hertou(g)" 😊

The dux of the Roman Empire was generals overseeing armies in the provinces appointed by the Emperor. When the barbarian tribes took over they copied the system and appointed their own dukes. Over time as society became more feudal the dukal title became hereditary, and thus noble title of duke was born.

Edit
The same shift happened to the lower rank general under the dux, the comes. Who would eventually become the count.

Does the Duchy of Lancaster not count as a peerage because it is always held by the monarch?

Kent and Sussex will soon be non royal when the current Dukes, who are princes, pass away and their non royal sons inherit the titles. The sons are non royals because they are great grandchildren of George V, too distant to qualify for royal titles
