Pro tip: One of the keys to this is to use a mandolin if you have one to cut the onions super thin. You want them so thin that you can almost see through them. If the onions are too thick, they won't cook properly by the time the burger is done.

i toast my bun in the pan before i make the burger. it's crispy, cools down, warms the heel when i put the burger on, and crown isn't too hot for the mayo/mustard combo.
