I lived in Lelystad for about five months in the nineties. Coming from Maastricht the contrast couldn’t be more extreme. There’s a lot to say about the architectural blandness ofcourse. I somehow liked that the town was spread out. I can imagine that’s what some people like in a (semi) urban environment. Most off putting however - and the main reason not to return - was the total lack of hustle and bustle. It’s a town for homely people. City center at night? Dead.

My parents live there. My mother hates it from the bottom of her heart and my father loves it. Of course I respect and love my father, but never have I known or even met someone who was so utterly wrong. Lelystad is horrible if you consider it to be a city. For a collection of neighborhoods on the outskirts of a big metro area, it’s pretty reasonable though.

Most of the new city's in the Netherlands are not beautiful, we call, them concrete city's, but the architect is very beautiful

I dont think lelystad is the ugliest city since there are aome cities that are a lot worse but yes it is the ugliest
