Weezer's debut self-titled "Blue Album" is full of classics. From Say it Ain't So, to the Sweater Song, to My Name is Jonas. But none is likely more iconic than Buddy Holly. Its music video introduced millions to the band, but the song itself nearly didn't make the cut. Find out why here.

If Buddy Holly was on any other album, I feel like it would’ve overshadowed the other songs. But on an album like Blue, where nearly EVERY song sounds like a hit, it’s right at home.

I can’t believe they named that “Buddy Holly” guy after a weezer song

I just like the fact that this short is bringing more attention to the highly underrated banger that is King Missile's "Detachable Penis."

When I was little I genuinely thought that Buddy Holly was a guy made up by Weezer and not a real person

I know Rivers used to have issues with the band being perceived as funny, especially because of Buddy Holly, but that’s just how they are. It doesn’t devalue the serious parts, but even without this song they have a fun and occasionally comedic nature. It seems like he has mostly embraced that in later years, with Pork and Beans, the YouTube collabs, Teal etc

Kind of a silly thing to worry about. Detachable Penis is an excellent song and the publicity would help the band overall. It's not really a fair comparison either because King Missile is an Avant-Garde band so they weren't really trying to make a hit. Their band was certainly more ironic and subversive. I would be incredibly grateful if any of my music got as much attention as Detachable Penis. I know he's concerned about it eclipsing the rest of the album, but it would really just draw more attention to the rest of the album.

I think Weezer should have been more worried about the Buddy Holly video turnnig the song into a novelty hit or a Detachable Pe**s. I mean, when I first saw the video, I thought to myself, "What a gimmick. These guys are a novelty act. We'll never hear from them again after this." However, after hearing Buddy Holly on the radio, just focusing on the song, I was really impressed. Then, I went out and bought the Blue Album. The whole album was catchy, from the first song to the last.

Buddy Holly is literally the perfect pop/rock song. I’ve listened to it countless times and still enjoy it immensely.

I love this song. The classics never go out of style, time does not pass in vain and things change, but not the Weezer's fans love for Buddy Holly.

I knew the album was iconic from song 1 (my name is Jonas)! When I got it (ON CASSETTE TAPE in 1994) you had three full tracks to vibe with before Buddy Holly to get a feel of the band. This was before you could easily skip tracks on CDs (lol) or streaming so I think people tended to spend more time with the band to see they had a ton of potential and were way more than that one song. Like, to the point the album was so good it was hard to believe they weren’t industry plants! It’s such an iconic first album, none of those songs felt silly to me then and they still don’t feel silly to me now.

This song is iconic because it is so catchy that getting it out of the mind of the listener is almost impossible.
