Its a walk before you run situation... You're talking about being articulate. Usually when you're talking about flat hair being used you're talking a begineer who isn't ready to learn about more complicated nuanced types of articulation. The flat hair will give you a more focused sound. It might be in your face but when you're just starting, you want to make A sound and you want that 1 sound you know how to make to be a focused sound. Later you can introduce basics like, when we play soft, tilting the bow to expose less hair.

This is horrible technique and bad advice... he is so tense..
You SHOULD be playing with every hair!! (That is what flat hair actually means) just without "pressing" and using the energy of the fingers and the weight of the relaxed arm. If you cannot make a beautiful sound and have total control of the articulation playing with all the hairs of the bow in contact with the strings, you simply have poor technique. Playing with flat hair does not mean the stick is right above the hair!!!! You should benefit from the flexibility of the stick!!!!!! Moronic

I agree. It is counterintuitive but I get a more articulate sound by using different amounts of hair on the string. I can dial in more air into the sound and I have more options available, more colors and bow speeds.
