The fact it doesn't even need an operation and fits in already commonly available biopsy needles are huge upsides. Though I wonder how long they remain functional in the body. I imagine basically getting a heart biopsy too frequently would get old pretty fast and come with other risks like accumulating scar tissue. But the upsides of not needing full blown open heart surgery, anesthesia, saving on blood transfusions, rejection drugs, and all the other costs of heart surgery is incredible. like pennies in materials and a few minutes with a nurse vs thousands dollars and hours of a full O.R. staff. The implications are actually insane.

My grandmother underwent a pacemaker implantation. Somehow during the procedure her diaphragm nerve got damaged and she has trouble with short breath, which in retrospect made it worse for her. There are no known treatments for this and only hope it gets better over time, it has been over a year since the operation. I pray medicine science will progress so others are not troubled with the complications.

My dad got to be one of the first to get a similar tiny pacemaker. His has no leads and is used to respond to the beat of the top of his heart. He had open heart in May 2020 (Yeah, bad timing ๐, literally the day of Covid lockdowns) and recently all three bundle branches, the nerves that communicate between the top and bottom of the heart, were overwhelmed by scar tissue and the bottom of his heart pretty much stopped responding to the top of his heart. He had to have this little pacemaker implanted to stimulate the bottom of his heart in response to the top of his heart. It was actually his original heart surgeon's son who did the surgery to implant it
