The lucky ones died when it sank. The rest were eaten by sharks. Over a thousand went in the water. If i remember right, around 30 survived.

Had family on it, he lived but received a shark bite on his leg, developed cancer in its scar tissue that killed him, he jokingly said "Sharks finally got me" .

IIRC he was under absolute orders to maintain radio silence at all costs, becsuse their mission was transporting atomic bomb parts and his ship was operating orders to disclose no information at any time for any reason.

None of the survivors blamed the Captain… even the Japanese sub captain testified and said that none of the evasive tactics the US navy used then would have prevented the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis had just finished delivering an A-bomb that would be dropped on Japan
