Doomguy's the most tragic fps character. Always getting such shit luck. He gets banished to Mars for protecting civilians and disobeying orders, he's bored and playing with a lighter and watching old war flicks all day (I imagine the ones like in Doom 3.), then all his fellow soldiers get the best weapons leaving him with a pistol as they scream while dying on the radio, dies at the end of Episode 1, then after being so badass the realm of Hell kicked him out, his pet bunny Daisy is brutally impaled on a pike. After helping humanity escape by rocket, waits to die only to get back up again to not lose hope, has a family, loses them, stays in Hell forever at end of Doom 64 as a guardian, but gets cast to another universe. Unused lines of dialogue from the Kahn Maykr states his old Earth from Doom 1-2 is gone and the demons took it probably while he was gone from his universe and his time with the Sentinels before they found him in Argent D'Nur on Mars. Then loses the only king friend he respected, betrayed by Commander Valen who trained him to fight amongst them, failed to save billions of souls, chained up in Hell, and had to struggle and get his revenge on hell for everything they ever did and had wronged him, tricked and sealed into a sarcophagus. And after waking up, gets betrayed by Hayden, defeats the Dark Lord, loses all his power to the point it'll kill him so he has to be locked away again. And you wonder this time, is he at peace, or silently suffering with the memories of his failure? It shows he's heavily broken and has PTSD as shown in Doom 2016, Eternal, I think it was briefly mentioned in Doom 64 since he was seeming more insane and even his voice in the cut voice lines from Quake 3's PS2 port portray that mindset very well, even recalling a man dying in his arms that didn't want to die and I'm guessing he hates himself that much since I'm guessing a voice line after you kill a duplicate Doomguy he says "You let them die...that's why I hate you." He even cuts his own face out of the photo of his wife and kid. I think Doomguy has always harbored self hatred towards himself for everything that went wrong. I guess that's why he chooses to remove his helmet and looks the Dark Lord/version of himself face to face, to make it more personal like he's confronting the source of his pain and inner demons, (How I'm interpreting this part.) not the Dark Lord, but himself. It makes me wonder if that's what the demons meant by silently suffering the first time he was locked away? Forever reminded of all his failures to save others, his two homes (planets), and everything. It's even kind of sad that i can imagine how upset he was over the death of the people at the UAC in 2016 (Level 2) when he wanted Hayden and Vega to give him the numbers and run down of how many died. Especially with Olivia reminding him of his failure to save all those people in that new universe going "You could not have saved them anyway." He's always struggling and trying. He can beat any demon except his own inner demons.
