One other issue with some (highly-processed) carbs is that they really raise your blood sugar fast. When your blood sugar is high, your body dumps out a bunch of insulin to get all that sugar into your cells for immediate use, and muscles and liver as glycogen for use when you're doing work, like lifting. If that doesn't happen either because your pancreas simply cannot produce insulin or you've gotten a resistance to insulin, you have diabetes. After your body moves all that sugar into your liver and muscles, you get that sugar crash that makes you hangry. This usually causes you to go searching for more carbs to get your blood sugar back up. You get stuck in this loop and you can only get out of it by letting your blood sugar stabilize by eating less processed carbs and more protein. You can absolutely eat carbs, but the less processed, the better. I don't crave sugar, per se, I crave bread. Wonderful, soft, slightly-sour bread. A baguette with butter is one of my comfort foods when I'm sick (and split pea soup).
TLDR: Keeping your blood sugar in check and stable is really important for controlling hunger and keeping your calories in check.
