Sounds like someone fresh out of school who should have joined an existing firm for awhile instead of starting their own firm right away.

Yeah, I agree with you. He will be tempted. I wouldn't want him for a lawyer.

I could at least somewhat understand the part with funding the cases on credit, but why tf you at a Hawks game sitting courtside? Last I checked, that ain't a legitimate business expense for about 99.5% of the population.

See that's my always biggest fear is that the lawyer will settle the case just because he wants an extra $7,000 because his firm might be too big or in financial trouble. I had that happen. And the lawyer end up terminating me as a client. And then I settled the case myself with the insurance adjuster for the full $10,000 and I end up posting it on his web page and he was pissed off.

I had a friend who started out practicing law from her home until she could comfortably afford to pay for an office, and hire a secretary. She was also very careful to set aside 1/3 of any money she made to pay her taxes. Fast forward 25 years and now she’s rich and debt free.

Reminds me of Richard Liebowitz, the copyright troll. He was taking more and more cases because he couldn't afford not too. I believe the wording French used to describe it was "a ponzi scheme on his own time". Basically had to take two cases to pay off a first, then four more to pay off the last two...and so on until he was temporarily disbarred for five yeara or something.

WOW..I do not even know what to say. This never occurred to me. It is a "Ponzi Scheme" approach to a case. It makes so much sense. Thank you.

Credit cards are AMAZING tools for managing your money responsibly. Essentially a well-sharpened chef's knife for paying for things without needing to worry a bout fraud, the balance of your bank account at any time other than the due date, and you get rewards for using them!

But if you don't pay the card off, ALL of those benefits come at a huge cost. Credit card interest is EXTREMELY high. Like a good knife, it's a useful tool when used correctly and a dangerous liability if the dangers aren't respected.

It never occurred to me to get a credit card and Max it out. But I do know someone who thought that’s what you were suppose to do and then make minimum monthly payments. Took a while for me to explain to them in a way that they understood but they have been increasing their credit score and I’m happy for them.

That's why ethics education is so important

You need to understand when financial obligations are buying into you and that they are affecting your cases. It sounds so logical when someone else says it but when you're in that place, you don't realise what's happening and what you're doing unless you've had someone explain you that these situations exist

Credit cards are for two things, deferring payment till the billing cycle while collecting benefits and emergencies. NEVER carry a balance. It’s exactly what they want you to do so they can charge you insane interest rates. If you don’t have the money to buy something at its current price, you DEFINITELY can’t afford to buy it plus all the interest.

Went solo straight out of law school. I kept my expenses very low and I had so much freedom to take the cases I wanted and to take good care of my clients.
