“The inexorable logic of terror is such that, as it grows, it becomes uncontrollable and, as a rule, turns against the terrorists themselves. No one was safe from a bullet: having shot all political opponents and class enemies in the 1920s and 1930s, the communists could no longer stop terror, and it became a weapon of internal party struggle and total suppression; it became necessary for the party to live and rule. Suddenly, it turned out that two-thirds of the delegates to the 17th Party Congress were enemies, and they were shot, and by the end of the 1940s, almost the entire Politburo had changed.
Later, I met a man whose story illustrates the mechanics of this run-up well. It happened in 1947. This man, a colonel in the armored forces, was arrested on a false denunciation and accused of treason. There was no evidence of his guilt, and no one was looking for it. All the investigators wanted from him was to get new names, new victims. All they demanded from him was to name who had recruited him into foreign intelligence, and they tortured him cruelly. He was willing to sign any nonsense against himself, but he could not slander his completely innocent acquaintances. Finally, feeling that he could not stand the torture any longer, and afraid to sign a false denunciation against someone in his unconsciousness, he did something unexpected for himself.
The interrogations and torture were carried out by three KGB investigators - a senior and two assistants. The next time, when they again demanded that he name the enemies who had recruited him, he suddenly pointed his finger at the senior investigator: "You!" he said. "You, bastard, recruited me! Remember? At the maneuvers, near Minsk, in 1933, near the birch grove!" - "He's delirious, he's gone mad, take him away!" said the senior investigator. "No, no, why take him away?" the other two said with interest. "This is very curious, let him continue talking." He never saw this senior investigator again - he must have been shot. One of the assistants became the senior, the case was quickly concluded, and my friend was sent to the camp with a quarter."

Moscow, 1970. A kindergarten teacher is giving a talk. She has hung a world map on the wall and explains: “Children, this is the United States of America. People there live very poorly. They have no money, and so they don’t buy their children candy or ice cream or take them to the movies… And this, children, is the Soviet Union. Here, everyone is happy and lives well, and they buy their children candy every day, and ice cream, and take them to the movies.”
Suddenly, a little girl starts crying. “Why are you crying, Tanya?” asks the teacher. “I want to go to the Soviet Union!” she sobs.

Soviet poster that helped police (presumably) to identify who is who.
They were hating Ukrainians all along, look where the hairline is going!
The author, also, seem to had an issue with Tatars that were all combined into the portrait of bald Lenin.
