For anyone who can, please support the Oregon Food Bank. They put out a call for a ceasefire and have had 12 organizations pull their funding. This food bank feeds tens of thousands of people a year.

Support if you can. Thank you.

Another random late night thought...

Hearing the conversation around the latest adaption of Color Purple has been really interesting. While I've never seen the live musical, I have seen the recent film and book adaption from the eighties. By far the eighties film was my favorite and is something I'm happy to watch any time, especially if I'm feeling a little beaten down by the world as we all do occasionally.

There have been comments on the acting, the singing, and the pacing. However, a statement that rung true to was summed up with one line: "No one asked for another remake of The Color Purple."

One of the truest statements about the film in my opinion, especially when you consider how good the eighties film was. I mean, come on. Whoopi killed that role.

Still, I'm wondering about something else...

Does the Color Purple speak to younger millennial women/Gen Z the way it did our aunties and mothers? Could that be a factor ( likely a small one) as to why the film didn't do as well as hoped?

Interested in other's thoughts.

I know I'm late at this point but when it comes to the Megan v. Nicki beef, there's one particular thought I've had over and over again...

The quality of Nicki's diss track "Bigfoot" aside, I've found myself wondering if this had been six or eight years in the past if the song would have landed better. Of course at that time Nicki was still pretty much running the rap game when it came to women rappers. Simultaneously, feminism wasn't where it is today. In 2024, we're solidly in the fourth wave that's (1) more inclusive, (2) pushes back against respectability politics, and (3) uplifts women to explore their sexuality/enjoy sex.

Nicki's line about "if you give Megan a beat, you can f***k her raw," fell flat because, well, isn't slut shaming women for having sex or enjoying sex very circa 2015? I think in the past, lines like that would have landed better but in 2024 women (and some men/general folks) have moved past the idea that seggs is only for the man's pleasure and that a woman having seggs immediately equates to her being a bad person.

In tandem, we've (for the most part) moved past victim blaming. People know the term, understand it somewhat and try to avoid it because it's harmful and feeds a dangerous system (rape culture, patriarchy, etc).

Also, no one really believes what's said in that line.

I know there's a lot more said in the song but the weapons Nicki used to diss Megan are dull. Are you following my metaphor, here?

Anyway, random thoughts late at night that have been brewing in my head for a few days now.

Maybe I'm out of touch but I have a question for my ladies, gals, and generally my fellow women-folk. Have you ever or had another woman refer to you as "Mama"? In the same way "girl" is used among women?

For example, "Thank you, mama!"

Please, do not confuse this with "mami" or "mommy."

Happy New Year, y'all!

Okay, now into what I'm really here for ...

I'm curious to know the opinions of Black and Brown folks who have seen the film Boys in the Boat. I've been hearing good things about it but when I see the trailer, I feel torn.

On one hand, everyone, especially people in the US love a good sports underdog story. Like, the number of times I watched Remember the Titans in school is wild.

And no, not just in gym class.

On the other hand, I see the trailer and I immediately want to distance myself from the film that seems to center this very white, very male yuppie sport. I ask myself...and what can I gain from this?

Or maybe I'm just tripping.🤷🏿‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️

Thanks to everyone who's given my latest video a watch! Because it had been awhile since I uploaded, I was more than a little nervous. Not to mention that the topic is well...it can get messy.

All of this is to say, thanks and I'm excited to get back to uploading more regularly!
