El Instituto Panamericano de Geografía e Historia fue creado el 7 de febrero de 1928, durante la VI Conferencia Internacional celebrada en La Habana, Cuba, a nivel de Ministros de Estados Americanos.
Desde su fundación, el Instituto Panamericano de Geografía e Historia ha apoyado y contribuido decididamente al avance de las ciencias que corresponden a su campo de acción. Connotados investigadores y científicos, así como autoridades de la más alta jerarquía en los Estados Miembros, han sido importantes protagonistas en el proceso de evolución de la institución desde su nacimiento. Muchos años han pasado y, sin embargo, la vigencia e importancia estratégica del Instituto se mantiene y consolida, con base en el reconocimiento de su trascendental misión.
El IPGH mantiene vínculos con múltiples organizaciones afines a las áreas de investigación del IPGH, mediante los cuales se brinda colaboración a los Estados Miembros.
