4 years ago, I set up AWS Multi-Account Automation that helps save โฌ180K annually for my Finnish customer.
The customer needed an AWS account for every application and per environment.
Each new account required a complex setup:
Spanning three working days and 24 man-hours
Costing us approximately โฌ3,000 per account
With an average of 5 to 6 accounts per month, that added up to nearly โฌ180K annually.
The Problem:
Account creation was straightforward (about 10 minutes), but ensuring that each account was fully ready to use was complex. We had to consider multiple factors:
1. AWS Organizations
Correctly place accounts in the appropriate Organizational Unit.
Ensure Service Control Policies (SCPs) were adjusted without unnecessary boundaries.
2. Security
Enable CloudTrail to central audit account logging for compliances.
Integrate with AWS Config and AWS GuardDuty for proactive threat detection.
Setup a Central Security Hub console for compliance visibility.
Implement and improve SCPs for maximum compliance.
Create KMS keys in a security account and share them with the new accounts, maintaining strict key usage policies.
