The South African College of Music (SACM) is a department of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Cape Town (UCT). It is located on the University's Lower Campus in Rondebosch and offers a number of degree, diploma and post-graduate courses in African music, classical, jazz, opera and music technology. The College boasts several string, wind, brass and percussion ensembles as well as jazz ensembles, the UCT Big Band, a Pan-African Jazz Ensemble, the UCT Symphony Orchestra and Opera UCT that presents an annual season of opera performances. The South African College of Music was founded in 1910 and incorporated into the University of Cape Town in 1923. The Strubenholm building has been home to the SACM since 1925 and houses the world-renowned Kirby Collection of African, European and Asian instruments.
