Edvard Munch (born December 12, 1863 in Løten, died January 23, 1944 in Aker, now part of Oslo) – Norwegian painter and graphic artist.

Edvard Munch was an artist-innovator in many ways, especially in graphic art, a technique that he had significantly developed. He was the first to use colour graphic art on a large scale.

Artist's style:

strong contour,
smooth Art Nouveau line,
diversified colour,
after 1909 he brightened the palette
expression

Munch's work had a very strong influence on European painting at the beginning of the 20th century, being one of the main sources of expressionism. In Poland, Munch's influence in the art of Young Poland was evident thanks to Przybyszewski – Munch's influence can be seen especially in the painting of Wojciech Weiss.

In 2004, the Munch Museum was robbed with a gun, stealing the versions of The Scream and Madonna displayed there (other versions can still be seen at the National Gallery in Oslo).

On August 31, 2006, the police found the painting that had been missing for over 2 years.
