New video dropping tomorrow. I'll be talking loosely about everyone's favorite vintage lens - the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 - but that's not really what the video is about. It's been a minute since I've posted anything at all on this channel and for me, this video marks a return to doing what I love with a renewed sense of confidence in myself and my abilities. I've been down in the dumps creatively for awhile now, so this video took a long time to complete - not because it's long or because the edit is complicated. I've just been in a slump - blocked, frustrated, defeated and overwhelmed in so many ways. But, a lot of self-reflection and this wacky little Russian beauty has managed to pull me out. It feels good to complete something again and I'm excited to share it with y'all :)

Have you ever been "brought back to life" by a piece of gear - a camera, a lens or otherwise? Let me know in the comments below and stay tuned for the new release tomorrow.

Iā€™m setting a challenge for myself during my paternity leave: a video a day. Iā€™m going to try and post a different short clip of me and Nomi for every day of the next 6 weeks I have off. Usually when I publicly set goals like this for myself it doesnā€™t end well. The pressure of having to regularly post content (which I hate) and keep your ā€œpromiseā€ usually results in me giving up long before I would have if I didnā€™t speak my intentions out loud. But f*ck it. Letā€™s give it a go. Day 1 and 2 are live in my Shorts section. Come back each day for new contentā€¦..for now.

Today is the first day of my paternity leave. Looking forward to finally getting a chance to take a break from the 9-to-5 grind and REALLY focus on family. Also very excited to picking the camera back up and making content for you all. We just passed 3k subs! Iā€™ve got a lot planned for the next 6 weeks. Letā€™s see how much Naomi actually allows me to get done šŸ„°

Itā€™s been a crazy week yā€™all. Iā€™m a Dad! We welcomed our beautiful Naomi Lynelle last Friday and every day has been an adventure since. Words cannot express the love, fear, excitement that Iā€™ve felt over the past week. Despite the craziness I still managed to capture some video with the fp. Stay tuned for some choice b-roll coming soon.

Been playing around with the TT Artisan 17mm f/1.4. Itā€™s the first APS-C prime that Iā€™ve used on the fp and the results were surprising - in a good way. Full transparency, I didnā€™t realize it was a crop sensor lens until after it arrived šŸ˜³ I was inspired by the cinematography in Terrence Malickā€™s A Hidden Life, and apparently the inspiration was so strong that I completely ignored the fine print. Iā€™m pleasantly surprised though. I was able to capture some of my most FAVORITE images on the fp to date. A new video with the best of what Iā€™ve grabbed over the past couple weeks since receiving it comes out tomorrow.

Just found out some very useful info in the sigma fp subreddit: apparently you get better dynamic and highlight retention when shooting at ISO 800 vs ISO 100, which is supposedly the lower native ISO for the camera. Iā€™ll have to look into it more, but judging from a few test shots I just took in the morning hard light around the house, I may have been missing something all alongā€¦. Stay tuned. Might have to make a quick video about it.

My long overdue Sigma lens comparison video is out tomorrow so, in anticipation of that, I thought I'd provide some stills of the footage I was able to capture on both lenses for a bit of comparison. The two lenses in question are the Art series 24-70mm f/2.8 and the Contemporary series 28-70mm f/2.8. I was honestly surprised at how similar the two lenses performed, but I'm curious - do y'all see any differences in visual quality between the two from the sample images I've provided here? Do any of you have a preference between the Art and Contemporary lines? If so, what are the reasons for it? Let me know in the comments, and stay tuned for tomorrow's video! It's been a minute since I've posted any reviews or discussions and it feels good to finish something. Can't wait to share.

Hereā€™s some of my favorite frames from a collection of memories that make up the new video Iā€™m releasing tomorrow. Getting back to my montage roots! Iā€™m still blown away by the quality of the 12-bit 1080p files coming out of the Sigma fp. I recorded everything to an SD card (no more external drive!) and ā€œsuper scaledā€ the footage to 4k in Resolve. VERY pleased with the results, even without upscaling. Canā€™t wait to share. Whatā€™s your opinion on 1080p vs. 2160p video? Does size matter? Or is it bit depth?

Some stills from the b-roll ā€Ŗ@mxgwipā€¬ and I shot today. Had fun stealing shots in the local Publix. So many yogurt options - kinda feels like the amount of options we have when it comes to choosing a camera body or a lens these days.
