Does Sin Really Belong in the Church?
Episode 1 â Sin Belongs in the Church
In the debut episode of The Study Boys, Lex Lutheran and FLAME react to Dr. Joel Biermannâs podcast Joel Biermann, engaging his provocative claim that âSin Belongs in the Church.â Together, we unpack what this means for Christians today, wrestling with the reality of sin, the grace of Christ, and the churchâs calling to be a place of both truth and mercy.

Iâve been hearing and seeing a great deal of talk surrounding moral obedience, revival, and faithfulness. Amen? Well, not yet.
Proclaiming obedience, dying to the flesh, and faithfulness to a high moral standard *alone* has yet to pass the test for correct Christian messaging.
God is not after merely making moral beings who are squeaky clean and sit on a shelf like a mint-condition collectorâs item. No! This messaging and emphasis is not Christianâor exclusively Christian-informed.
The Bible plants our responsibility to be moral in our identity as sons and daughters in Christ, Jesus, and in serving our neighborâas an outworking of faith. Romans 14:23
â. . . For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.â
Holiness has as its goal helping others, as unto the Lord. It is bidirectional: God and neighbor.
Persons who wield this wonky approach normally:
⢠Have a low view of the Sacraments. They see them only as a metaphor or as symbolic, not as the gospel. Therefore, they derive little to no security from Godâs promises thereâwhich leads to finding assurance elsewhere.
⢠Teach awkwardly against good gifts like cars, clothes, money, health, and even family out of fear they will become idols. This type of talk stems from having a low view of Godâs creation and His provision through created things. Being more fearful and anxiety-ridden about making idols, they speak out against these things in an unnatural way, too often taking the negative position, as opposed to taking the careful time to positively promote using those Godly provisions properly.
⢠They tend to have a skewed view of salvation somewhere. They either teach falsely that Jesus did not die for all (limited atonement), or that bearing fruit (along with Jesusâs death) is where one looks to prove genuine faith, or some other version of works-based salvationâas if obedience earns, sustains, and/or leads to eternal rewardâheaven.
It may be hard to catch because, hey, whoâd speak out against obedience? To do so would, at first glance, make you seem loose and licentious. Yet, we are called not only to watch our morality but also our teaching.
We so easily notice a person who falls morally.
We rarely notice falls from sound teaching when they take on the form of promoting good morals as an end unto itself. Remember,
âa person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.â - Galatians 2:16
In Christ, we go hard after obedience, law-keeping, morality, and faithfulness, by faith. Yes! Yes! And yes! Yet, we are driven by our new identity as the baptized and by love to serve those around usâto make life less burdensome for them and to share our dear faith in Christ, Jesus.

If we abandon the Bible taught rightly, abandon the voice of ancient Christianity, and the three ecumenical Creeds (the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed, the Apostlesâ Creed), how will we even know what Christianity is? If a personâs doctrine contradicts Jesusâ goal for His Church: the Great Commission, love of God & neighbor and/or their life is immoral, then them saying true things and performing miracles would not make them right.

Why does this matter? Is this a mundane discussion that has no relevance? No. This is a conversation about the gospel and the comfort Jesus earned for His childrenâ-gifts delivered to us in baptism.

When proclamation and preaching are unclear about the proper place of good works in the Christian life, those works will inevitably be misplacedâused as a stairway to heaven and a means of earning Godâs blessing, rather than as a pathway to serve oneâs neighbor, as unto the Lordâwhich often opens the door to share the hope that lies within. #LawAndGospel

Godâs good law will not save you. Your neighbor needs youâneeds you to be who you are, the baptized, and keep the law for their good, as unto the Lord. Only Jesus savesâthatâs the gospel, not the law. The law says, âDoâ; the gospel says, âDone.â

Reformation > Revival
As we return to Scripture and the history of the Churchâs teachings concerning Word and Sacraments, the results will lead to many being revivedânot with mere feelings, emotions, and a fleeting spiritual high, but with long-lasting results demonstrated in service and sacrifice for neighbor, as unto the Lordâthat will enliven the mood, enhance joy in Christ Jesus, and bring growth among Godâs Church. #ReformationOverRevival

Generic American Evangelicalism left this part out: âfor the forgiveness of sinsâ â concerning Communion.
But our dear Christ was clear when He spoke:
âTake, eat; this is my body.â
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying,
âDrink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.â
â Matthew 26:26â28
We were robbed of the Gospel.
Lord, please heal Your Church and restore Her Sacramental soundness. Amen.
