I put a heck of a lot of work into this episode, and it was an unfortunate coincidence that composer Angelo Badalamenti passed away. RIP to a monumental composer! I found out just as I was finishing last night. I dive into the music theory behind the dissonant verse of Mr. Bungle's Travolta / Quote Unquote (1991), and then offer an Analytical Film Analysis of David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986). A convenient pairing of film and music!

Iām Carl King. Independent music composer, filmmaker, and creator of animated shows. Iāve made zany albums as Sir Millard Mulch and Dr. Zoltanāand also a pretty complicated Carl King album called Grand Architects of the Universe. The album has guest performances by Dweezil Zappa, Virgil Donati, Marco Minnemann, Travis Orbin, and Mike Keneally.
I also score orchestral music for films, like Best of Five: The Classic Tetris Champions.
Drummers might know me as the director of Morgan Agrenās Conundrum, with guest stars Devin Townsend, Brendon Small of Metalocalypse, and Danny Carey of Tool.
Weekly, I host The Carl King Podcast. I talk about music, filmmaking, and general creativity. And the occasional interview, like Steve Vai, Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle, and Mark Borchardt of Coven.
I created and wrote two animated pilots: That Monster Show (starring Dan Foster, LeeAnna Vamp, Joanie Brosas) and Oracle of Outer Space (starring Dweezil Zappa and Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse).
