24th August 1814 - The British burn Washington

During the War of 1812 (between the USA and the United Kingdom), British troops land and capture Washington.
The US President had fled but the British had a dinner in the White House before setting it (and other public buildings) ablaze.

14th August 1900 - The Siege of the Foreign Legations in Peking (Bejing) lifted.

The siege, during the Boxer Rebellion, provided the backdrop to the film "55 Days At Peking" starring Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner & David Niven.

7th August 1914 - First British Rifle Shots in WW1.

Alhaji Grunshi fired the first rifle shots for the British army in the First World War, as the British took on the Germans in the latter's colony of Togoland, West Africa.

In light of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, I have decided to share the story of the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated.
Spencer Perceval was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons in 1812.
