Where do your knees end up during a squat, clean or snatch? Ideal technique dictates the knee remains in a stable position “stacked” position over the foot. This position is a small range as you can see in this graphic by @olychad. The main factor that dictates the difference between good & bad form is the foot! When the foot remains stable the knee remains stable. If the foot rolls to the inside (arch collapse) the knee moves into inefficient “knee cave” - and when the foot rolls on the outside (common when people over use the cue “knees wide”) the knee moves into a bad position as well.
And before anyone says “Chinese lifers purposefully cave their knees so it’s okay” … stop it. No they don’t. Knee cave is a bleed of energy, no coach who understands biomechanics would teach athletes to do this. Even the great lifters like Lu Xiaojun (who everyone brings up as an example) shows amazing technique on 99% of all squats all the way up until his max lifts - at which time he pushes against his technique capacity and shows some positional breakdown - but he is not trying to allow it to happen.
