Give us your favorite use of a soloist integrating a MELODY QUOTE from a different tune in his/her solo.

They can be a funny and suprising additions to any solo. Bird and Desmond, just to name a few, did this pretty much all the time. Or Michael Brecker quoting Coltrane on "Not Ethiopia" from the live album by Steps Ahead named "Smokin' In The Pit" even seems to lift an already exhilarating solo at the right moment into further epicness.

This will be fun, give us your favorites in the comments below!

Important: Better not insert straight links (they get automatically filtered into the potential spam folder), but name the source and timestamp. If you put in a link, I'll manually check for them in the spam folder but it may take a bit until I've done that for your comment to show up.

Hi everyone, Timothy here.

For years Iā€™ve been wanting to create a guitar study group and now itā€™s finally here!

I decided to start a study group focused on harmony and there are a couple of reasons why:

I'm interested in a wide variety of music (I'm sure most of you following us have an eclectic taste in music as well).

Studying music in that wide variety of genres is fascinating, troublesome and overwhelming.
So many artists, so many influences, ...
However, harmony is one of the core pillars. It has seen many different approaches throughout the centuries as well, but it's at the root, not the branches.

The study of guitar and harmony is an ongoing thing and a couple (or a lot) of videos on social media here and there can be useful, insightful and entertaining. When it comes to actually "training", studying and implementation however, an opportunity for feedback, testing, having a curriculum, etc. are going to be much more helpful.

Harmony is always taught at the piano (with good reason), but why should pianists have all the fun?

We will be looking at different approaches and ā€œerasā€ simultaneously, so we can make connections and break down the (artificial) walls between styles and periods.
Weā€™ll be incorporating partimenti, figured bass, bebop, modality; harmonizing bass lines and melodies; youā€™ll be given assignments, tests and analyses; weā€™re going to turn the fretboard inside out (in a structured manner) and weā€™ll finally slay the myth that guitarists canā€™t readā€¦

Maybe that last one will be a bit harder, but your reading will get better!

Question: How would you like a devoted artist analysis/method presented to learn from?

I'm working on a Paul Desmond method/course/thesis and it started as a more written thesis with examples, but recognized that it should have more practicality besides some examples and analyses of them. But only a book of exercises doesn't cover the mechanics and concepts properly at all either, which is imo one of the most important aspects if you want to go deep.

I've been researching, transcribing more and more, analyzing, ... and learning montly so much more about Desmond which I'm eager to share at one point, but I'm afraid the "extra researching" is also a way of procrastination in determining hard decisions in content organisation... What you can call "action faking", although I do eventually learn more. But I've waited probably so long, when I eventually get to it, it will be more of a Desmond Bible than a feasible document for learning. Trying to avoid that.

Timothy is developing likewise material on a different subject after his "Allan Holdsworth: A Method To The Madness" as well, so your feedback will be immensely appreciated to make it as comprehensible as possible.

In meantime, we started to take actual action by organizing a "Desmond Study group" and a "Guitar study group" on Patreon, where we will share weekly video lessons, analyses and much more on these subject already, just so we force ourselves to be consistent in small chunks. Just like the weekly transcription regime has done a great deal for overcoming procrastination. You can check that here: www.patreon.com/sharpeleventranscriptions

Any thoughts or feedback you want to add in the comments also greatly appreciated!

If you haven't seen it yet, you can download most of our transcriptions for free now! (For a link, see below. But, wait a minute! You're thinking "What's The Catch?", we can't blame you, that's what we would think too. Below follows a no BS guide with complete transparency for our plans with this channel. Only if you make it through, there's your link to free transcriptions. Scrolling down is so 2022).

So, newsflash: making jazz transcriptions isn't making us particularly rich. It really has been mostly for our own curiosity and learning, whilst simultaneously having tremendous fun in having this community with all of you. We genuinely love the comment sections to talk jazz and music with so many of you. Also through our email, we've had great conversations and input. Thanks for getting in touch!
But, our wives do kind of need extra convincing perhaps. They want us in the pub drinking beer instead of wasting time on transcriptions. So here is our plan to make things hopefully more feasible and more justifiable to keep on going:

Step # 1. The "WHAT" we do, you get for free (that is: the pdf's for the vast majority of our transcriptions (300+), the most recent ones stay a year exclusive for Patreon, then they will become part of the open source for free download)

Step #2. The "HOW" we do it and what we've learned from these --> Transcribing methods, Sax/Guitar essentials, Improv Methods (and more) <-- we've moulded over the past years into Ebooks, video Courses, Methods and packs for you in our store.

Step #3. We'd earn something substantial so we can justifiably make MORE FREE CONTENT for you all, like nerding out on specific solo's, tutorials and Q&A's on how to transcribe yourself, soloing over Giant Steps while tapdancing, ... and so on.

Here is what YOU can do:

Step 1. Subscribe if you haven't yet. It's absolutely free. That would help already tremendously. Thank you!

Step 2. Many people have asked if they can donate. The answer is: no. But we have something better. Grab yourself something from our store or check what we have to offer on Patreon, it is donating AND getting something in return that might make you look and sound smarter in the future! See sharpelevenmusic.com/store and www.patreon.com/sharpeleventranscriptions

We have a new dedicated Sax and Guitar study group option on Patreon. For Sax, Desmond fans especially, you might reaaaally dig it! For Guitar, there is so much bearded fretboard and (jazz) harmony wisdom in there... it automatically grows your moustache.
Check it out here: www.patreon.com/sharpeleventranscriptions

Oh yeah, we do have some Sharp Eleven merchandise as well. Almost forgot about it (cause we're terrible at advertising), but there are some fun T-shirts and hoodies and the kind in there:
-teespring.com/stores/edge-effect-eu
-teespring.com/stores/edge-effect-us

Almost forgot, but here is the free download link, you scrolling short-cutter: sharpelevenmusic.com/transcriptions

Oooof. That was our tri-annually communication post.
Now we can resume making courses in the silent background to dump on our website, never to be seen.
Hmm, that's maybe why real businesses have specific communication people... I see.

Let us know if you think this plan is sound or not, if you have ideas for us to improve, let us know!

Cheers.

Jorre & Timothy. Your dear bearded Belgians.
