We were all once children, that’s an undeniable fact. And in our heart of hearts, we are still children.

This is something which unites all of humanity, male, female, regardless of culture, ethnicity or creed.

“The older I grow, the more earnestly I feel that the few joys of childhood are the best that life has to give.” — Ellen Glasgow

Deep down, we always yearn for this more innocent time when life was simpler and we could take the warmth and protection of our family and friends for granted.

Childhood experiences evoke strong emotions in us all and bonds and memories formed during this time last forever, whether we remain in touch or not — the embrace of a loving parent, a favourite playground, the excitement of a visit from a beloved relative, the first steps of a younger sibling.

County Hall Arts (CHA) is delighted to announce its latest concours. Classical music composers are invited to submit proposals for the We Are Still Children Symphony, with a winner’s prize of €100,000 to be awarded to an outstanding work and up to €100,000 further available as a contribution towards a symphony orchestra performance of the selected piece.

Proposals should be inspired by and evoke the joy and vibrancy of childhood, the purity of familial love and the bittersweet nature of adult reflection on times long gone, yet still feel like yesterday.

A selection of entrants will be long-listed and invited to create their symphony for a second stage of adjudication.

Our childhoods represent an uncomplicated time when we played, talked and learned with our fellow children without concern for their background or beliefs. These shared experiences are driven by the fundamental human instinct to connect and make friends, a vital part of a child’s development that creates a sense of belonging, security and identity.

The loss of innocence amongst a generation of children growing up in today's troubled world is heart-breaking. Ultimately we must hope and pray a solution to the challenges faced across the globe might be found by remembering we have much more which unites us than separate us.

We were once children. We are still children.

“If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.” — Tom Stoppard

The #Competition is #open to #entrants of all #nationalities and #ages. There is no #entry fee.

Described as "the quintessential samurai hero of modern Japanese history”, the impact of Saigō Takamori’s leadership and influence is felt in Japan even to this day.

The ZEN virtues of Saigō-san are an inspiration to County Hall Arts (CHA) and its ethos - indeed, the charity’s motto is "It is not how much we do, but how well. The will to do. The soul to dare”.

CHA is therefore delighted to announce its latest sculpture concours - the creation of a Saigō Takamori Sculpture themed around ‘Bushido' to be placed at the historic County Hall on London’s renowned Southbank, to honour the samurai code he so epitomised.

Sculptors are invited to submit proposals comprising of a 3D or 5D design. The chosen winner will be commissioned to make the real sculpture in return for a first prize of €50,000 (plus the cost of materials).

The proposed sculpture should be 1.9 meters tall and composed of natural, non-synthetic materials — specifically wood, stone, ceramics or bronze. We will consider a range of styles.

Sometimes revered as 'the last samurai’, Saigō-san was born in Kagoshima in 1828. He emerged from modest samurai origins to become one of the most important leaders in the Meiji Restoration whilst subsequently driving to preserve Japanese culture in the face of westernisation.

The life of selflessness and sacrifice Saigō-san led - always striving for others above himself and his own interests - epitomises the values CHA holds dear and wishes to encourage in the wider world, that good deeds and good works are undertaken not for money, not for power, not for fame, but for Others.

Sculpture, as timeless as any form of artistic expression, has a long history at County Hall, and numerous distinctive sculptural works have adorned this storied building since its opening some 100 years ago.

More recently, CHA announced two joint winners for its ‘Peace’ sculpture competition, while also launching a call for entries to a ‘Fufu‘ sculpture concours. Our hopes to commemorate Saigō-san in this manner is part of a wider commitment to sculpture as a noble and enduring art.

The #Competition is #open to #entrants of all #nationalities and #ages. There is no #entry fee.

“We shall find peace. We shall hear angels, we shall see the sky sparkling with diamonds.” ― Anton Pavlovich Chekhov

‘Peace’ - a simple word with a profound meaning and yet seemingly ever unreachable concept.

The quest for lasting peace has challenged mankind since the beginning of time. Why should one brother strike another?

While manipulative warmongers might seek to boost their power and command for the sake of their ego and pride - invariably it is the innocents who suffer the grave consequences of war and brutality. So long as we cannot wipe out “YOWAIMONO IJIME” (Bullying), PEACE will never prevail.

The latest concours from County Hall Arts (CHA) wishes to honour and move those who truly seek peace - for the benefit of all humanity. To become a musical representation of and inspiration for our never-ending quest for global peace, needed more than ever in these uncertain and unsettling times.

Classical music composers are invited to submit proposals for their ‘Peace Symphony' and the opportunity to share in a prize pool of over €200,000.

Proposals should reach for the lofty goal of creating an artistic work which might provide hope that, no matter how distant, a time may come when suffering due to warfare and conflict is over, for good.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

County Hall Arts (CHA) is delighted to announce its latest #musical #concours - a #songwriting #competition with the theme of ‘#Mother’. A #winner’s #prize of £30,000 is on #offer.

‘Mother’, ‘#Madre’, ‘#Mamma’ - in any language a word which evokes stirring #emotions in us all. (Indeed, the word ‘Mother' has roots in the Latin ‘#mater’ - ‘#matter’ being at the #core and beginning of everything)

No #love or #bond can surpass the profound, unconditional love of a mother for her #child - life-lasting and beyond.

CHA wishes to celebrate this, love in its purest form - and the women who take on the role of #motherhood with such #strength, #selflessness and #grace. We're seeking original song compositions which do so.

Our mothers provide us with our first #home, they give us their #hearts and their love, and we #carry them with us #forever. Though a mother’s love may on #occasion be #tested, it can be an #eternal #gift. No matter what, they are with us always in everything we do and the #decisions we take. They are there in #spirit and their love continues to #guide us forever.

Mothers so often make #sacrifices, without #expecting anything in return - they seek to #nurture, #protect and #provide, no matter how much it takes from them.

So let us strive to #capture - in song and in #melody - what it means to be #inspired by and #appreciate our mothers.

The #Competition is #open to #entrants of all #nationalities and #ages. There is no #entry fee.

County Hall Arts (CHA) is delighted to #announce its latest #musical concours - a #songwriting #competition themed around ‘Fufu’ with a #prize of £30,000 on #offer.

‘Fufu’ (or ‘夫婦’) is a #Japanese term for ‘#husband and #wife’ or ‘#married #couple’. Already launched by CHA recently are the #Symphony ‘Fufu’ and ‘Fufu’ #Sculpture #concours

Countless #partners and #couples have sought to immortalise their #love for each other in #song. However, only the deepest and most #heartfelt works have stood the test of time.

The winning entry in the CHA ‘Fufu’ Song-Writing Concours will reach beyond mere declarations of ‘I love you’, ‘I need you’ or ‘I miss you’. Rather, we wish to hear about the day-to-day of being one half of a ‘Fufu’, the #joy of seeing your #loved one #smile, hearing their #laughter or even receiving a #playful #admonishment.

Indeed, a #successful #marriage necessitates falling in love many times, always with the same person - submissions should be #inspired by and #reflect on such a love.

Love and #companionship with the #power to endure and prosper over decades, through thick and thin. How can we #capture such devotion in song and #melody - in a #truthful, evocative and #timeless way?

The #Competition is open to entrants of all nationalities and ages. There is no entry fee.

#Sculpture is a timeless and pure form of #artistic #expression - as timeless and pure as the #love between a #husband and #wife.

Following on from the Symphony Fufu competition and the commissioning of two ‘Peace’ Sculptures, County Hall Arts (CHA) is delighted to announce its latest concours - calling for the creation of a timeless ‘Fufu' Sculpture.

‘Fufu’ (or ‘夫婦’) means 'husband and wife’ or '#married #couple’ in Japanese.

CHA wishes to #celebrate the many ‘fufu’ who have touched all of our lives - be they #parents or #grandparents, or whether we’re one half (or the other!) of such a couple.

Love and #companionship enduring and prospering over decades, through thick and thin.

The winner who is ultimately selected will be #commissioned to make their sculpture in return for a first #prize of €50,000. Two runners-up will also be #awarded a cash prize of €1,500.

Sculpture has had a strong presence at County Hall since the #building’s beginnings some 100 years ago.

Work by early 20th century #sculptors Ernest Cole and Alfred Hardiman which adorn the exterior of the building are amongst the most eye-catching sights on the South Bank.

The #Competition is open to entrants of all nationalities and ages. There is no entry fee.
