A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when there’s damage to the spinal cord that disrupts communication between the brain and the body. The severity and effects depend on the location and extent of the injury.
Types of SCI:
Complete injury – total loss of motor and sensory function below the level of injury.
Incomplete injury – some function remains below the injury level.
Common Causes:
Trauma (e.g., car accidents, falls, sports injuries)
Diseases (e.g., tumors, infections, spinal stenosis)
Symptoms:
Loss of movement or sensation
Muscle weakness or paralysis
Pain or intense stinging sensation
Loss of bladder/bowel control
Difficulty breathing (especially with injuries higher on the spine)
Classification:
Cervical injuries (neck) – can cause tetraplegia/quadriplegia
Thoracic/lumbar injuries – can cause paraplegia (legs and lower body)
Treatment:
Emergency care: immobilization and prevention of further injury
Medications: steroids like methylprednisolone (sometimes used early)
Surgery: to remove bone fragments or stabilize the spine
Rehabilitation: physical and occupational therapy, assistive devices
