For those that have been following my instagram about the world championships in Spain... a few thoughts. I will be posting a video in the coming weeks about it!

I've had a week to reflect on the World Championship held in Laredo, Spain last weekend. I decided after last year being a competitor and captain in Finland that it just doesn't give our athletes the opportunity to do their best when they have the stress of everything else going on. I wanted to give the British spearfishing team one point of focus - the two days of competition. Being the captain is a responsibility I didn't take lightly and learned so much from this competition about building a team dynamic, tending to the needs of different individuals and being able to adjust to the ever shifting sea conditions and stresses of the competition organisation.

I am extremely proud of how the team performed in what was a roll of the dice when it comes to conditions. During scouting I hit my head on the bottom at 24m due to poor visibility, a day later I could see fish in 20m - absolutely wild.

Reigning British Champion, David Stephens had me as a boat driver and spearfishing caddy for the two days of competition - I've never seen someone with a work rate like his. 236 dives on the first competition day in a 5 hour comp. With conditions changing so rapidly fish that were scouted had moved to different areas but he still got on to the scoreboard. The second day I was super busy in the boat dealing with all the fish coming over the side. Sadly the scales were hard on us this day with 10 fish captured but 3 being valid by a small margin. Very impressed by Dave's debut at a world championships and no doubt not the last.

Veteran David O'Callaghan is no stranger to these events at 68 years young. In an extremely competitive field with divers on top of each other, he held his own and put runs on the board both days. Dave was skippered by Matthew Hunt who was an absolute asset to the team helping with the scouting, skippering during the competition and always being a beacon of morale.

Kevin Daly is someone I have always admired as a spearfisher. Extremely precise and calculated as well as the breath hold of a sperm whale (I did some filming a few months ago and gosh it was a rough time for me!). The three days I scouted with Kevin I had to make sure he wasn't going to die after each dive from a coughing fit. It's your worst fear going into a competition, being physically unwell but he's not one to let that get in the way. With ex British champion & reserve athlete Ross Gilfillan skippering for the two days, the ex-RSA duo put in a huge shift. KD managed to spend 1 hr 45 min on underwater on the first day during the 5 hour competition was a huge feat given his health. As expected, he did very well adapting to the conditions on both days and stuck to the golden rule, don't leave fish to find fish. Grafting each day KD sits at a very respectable 23rd.

To the team, Dave, Dave, Kevin, Ross & Matt. Thank you for putting your trust in me for this event. I've got a lot to learn and many things to improve on but a ship only turns by degrees.

For all our partners who supported us throughout this time in Spain, thank you for the patience and love. Especially Hannah Louise Mann whom I saw very briefly upon hitting the ground.

To our support from back home in Blighty, The British Spearfishing Association, London International Club of Spearfishing & Start Point Spearfishing - Online & In Store. Thank you for believing in us, supporting us financially & personally. Of course we all looked very pucker thanks to our kit from YAKKIDA apparel, although I don't think many shirts made it home after they were swapped at the gala dinner!

Finally, congratulations to all the winners of the competition. Spain once again proves their dominance in world spearfishing events with 1st place in Men's and Women's. Of course Italy in the men's competition are always very strong with 2nd & 3rd places. A great effort from the pacific in the women's with New Zealand in 2nd and Tahiti in 3rd.

Now we must prepare for the Euro-African championship in Türkiye next year!
