VOX POPULI, VOX DEI a.k.a this is the review the majority of our community voted for this month... for whatever reason.

We successfully finished filming this weekend, so now it will take us a few days to process the footage in post-production. And before some gas mask collector has a heart attack, we know this is not the authentic Soviet PMG, but a licensed Hungarian copy. Everything will be explained in the video, so don't bother commenting on the subject, although I'm sure, it must be really tempting for many of you.

Those who have watched our reviews of legacy CBRN respirators like GP-5 or PRV-U know that we don’t recommend anyone to rely on them when it comes to protection in general. We explained our reasoning in the videos so we won’t repeat the arguments here.

What we don’t do however, is spreading hoaxes and half-truths to make you buy an expensive gas mask because the end times are upon us or that you won’t survive the World War III unless you spend hundreds of dollars.

We know not everyone can afford to buy an expensive piece of protective equipment and also that having at least some form of protection is better than having nothing at all.

But that’s not in the interest of companies using fear-mongering as their main marketing strategy. Certain e-commerce companies wage a comical on-line warfare against any older gas mask type allegedly for the sake of your own safety. But at the same time they recommend using their own respirators with two 40 mm filters and don them the way they’re not designed to be used.

Not even the most expensive gas mask will protect you if you don’t know how to properly use it and any gas mask is only as good as the filter you use it with.

Someone who bought a GP-5 in good condition for 5 bucks and is knowledgeable about the proper use of gas masks is in my opinion better off than someone who forgets to plug an empty filter port on his expensive respirator.

Do you know the main difference between any commercial product with and without the “tactical” adjective? It’s the price tag of course and in this regard, most CBRN respirators are no exception.

The most glaring example of this questionable business trend that is so prevalent in the US is a company named Parcil Safety.

They buy Chinese gas masks in bulks, white-label them and sell for hefty profit to unaware civilians as “tactical” and “military” respirators.

Of course, they are not the only ones - there are many companies running similar businesses, but what does the words TACTICAL and MILITARY actually mean when it comes to gas masks, besides the price markup?

In our opinion, apart from being NIOSH or EN 136 certified, respirators suitable for tactical and military use should have different sizes, they need to be very compact (so they could be folded into a reasonably small pouch), lightweight and built for quick-donning. Basically all the things Chinese and other industrial gas masks are not.

Scott M95, Avon FM12 or Avon C50 are great examples of TRUE tactical CBRN respirators because they are very flexible, resilient, come in different sizes and they are designed for aiming a rifle.

We don’t even think that a good tactical gas mask necessarily needs to have a single visor. Having two lenses makes the facepiece more flexible which in turn makes the mask more adaptable to user’s face.

Next time you’re on a lookout for a tactical CBRN respirator, don’t get swayed by the cheap marketing trick of adding words TACTICAL and MILITARY in front of a fancy sounding codename like “CM” “CS” “PD” followed by a random number. There are only a handful of reputable manufacturers of military grade CBRN respirators, yet there’s an ocean of resellers of white-labeled industrial gas masks made in Asia and Europe.

An old Japanese proverb says “the more filters you attach to a CBRN respirator, the more blessings from Gasmaskjó (the ancient patron of gas masks) you shall receive”.

You might think that what you just read was a total nonsense, but most likely, you never studied the history of Japanese folklore so your opinion will ultimately be shaped by people who claim to be knowledgeable on the subject.

OK, it’s a complete nonsense so don’t bother trying to Google it.

But for some reason it seems that people actually believe the more filters you attach to a gas mask, the better protection it provides. Just like more stripes means more Adidas, if you’re familiar with the saying.

It’s also not a coincidence we chose photos of CM-6M for this meme as there are countless photos on the internet made by “tactical influencers" and guntuber shills wearing it with two filters. Not to mention this practice is blatantly encouraged by a certain e-commerce company selling CBRN respirators in the US, either because they are unfamiliar with proper gas mask usage or they simply don’t care about your safety as looking cool is more important for their marketing purposes.

Thank God the mask doesn’t have more filter ports, right?

So, what’s wrong with wearing two 40 mm filters?

We already mentioned why it is wrong and how it can compromise your safety in at least 3 videos so far. But to put it simply, the problem is their weight.

It is recommended that the maximum weight of the filters attached to the facepiece does not exceed 500 g.
Usually a single CBRN filter weights over 362 g and those are the lightweight ones! Two of them mounted to a gas mask will substantially exceed the recommended weight limit so proper tightness cannot be ensured, especially in situations with sudden head movements or fast movement through rugged terrain involved.

There are certain gas mask types designed to be used with 2 cartridges simultaneously like Avon GSR or FM50, but those use proprietary low-profile filters and not 40 mm ones.

To wrap things up, wearing two 40 mm filters may make you look bad-ass in the eyes of uneducated public, but it’s laughable to people like us as it presents a big time safety liability. Despite many common misconceptions, it doesn’t make your breathing easier and it’s also quite wasteful as quality filters are not exactly cheap these days.

THERE ARE SO MANY GAS MASKS WE'D LIKE TO REVIEW AND OF COURSE, NEW ONES KEEP SHOWING UP, THANKS TO OUR AWESOME SUPPORTERS!

CM-5D review announcement aside, what we really wanted to make video about this month is another "legendary Soviet junk" - the PMG gas mask. Yes, we know it's the Hungarian clone but people don't search for videos about 70M, so there's that. We thought it won't come until February but here we are. And since we don't want to change what we already promised, we'll just let the community decide what review we should prioritize.

So what would it be? Another Soviet gas mask or an affordable modern one?

🤠 I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY PEOPLE HAVE THE TENDENCY TO BELIEVE THAT GUNTUBERS ARE SOMEHOW AUTOMATICALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE ON THE TOPIC OF CBRN PROTECTION JUST BECAUSE OF... WELL, GUNS. 🔫

There's this trend, especially in the US, to promote CBRN gear through content creators whose videos are mainly about guns. A lot of such individuals also claim to be "ex-special forces" or ex-military which in the eyes of many makes them automatically more credible in other areas commonly associated with military service - like usage of CBRN respirators for example.

But the truth is, most of these "tAcTicAl" YouTubers are just as knowledgeable about the proper use of protective equipment as the people looking for guidance FROM THEM.

I've seen most of the top watched videos on the topic and I think at this point I have seen it all. An "Ex NAVY seal" who doesn't know he's missing a filter port plug while "testing" a gas mask. Guys wearing respirators with two 40 mm filters or simply having a wrong size while saying how awesome it is.

All of this is very funny to someone like me but sadly, most people don't realize that what they see is a far cry from a proper usage of life-saving equipment. They think that's the way it should be. It's because most people are clueless in this regard and the companies advertising through these YouTubers know it.

We don't try to impress anyone with some military, ex-special forces backstory and we don't think owning a gun makes you an expert on CBRN protective equipment. Truth to be told, most soldiers I know are completely disinterested in the topic of CBRN protection and the gas masks they have been issued are seen as a nuisance they have to train with from time to time.

The CM-5D gas mask is the predecessor of the widely known CM-6M but unlike the CM-6M, the CM-5 line has been discontinued long time ago. These respirators can now be obtained only through surplus stores and online marketplaces of Central Europe.

And they're quite affordable!

We got ours for less than 50 bucks and since we want to focus on reviews of affordable respirators, the CM-5D is in our opinion the ideal first candidate as it features most of what you would expect from a contemporary gas mask. We think basic respirators for civilians shouldn't cost hundreds of dollars and SPOILER ALERT - this one is actually quite good. The review is coming out this month, so stay tuned!

⚠️ HERE'S A DRAFT OF OUR PLANNED RELEASES FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2025! ☢️

Just as we announced in the previous community post, the main topic of this year's videos will be AFFORDABLE CBRN RESPIRATORS. By affordable we mean gas masks that don't cost hundreds of dollars but can be usually obtained for less than hundred bucks or in the similar price range. 💸

The other thing apart from price is their availability, which is especially problematic for people living the US. We're currently establishing contacts will certain manufacturers and re-sellers so hopefully we will be able to point you to reliable sources when the time comes.

Of course not all the reviews will be about affordable gear as we also want to finally release the anticipated GSR/FRR review this summer.

We're actively monitoring review requests from you guys in comment sections but some of the respirators are either way too expensive for what they are or they're not that easy to get. But we're doing our best to obtain the most requested pieces. For example, we plan to make the 4A1 review in the second half of 2025 once we get it.

Remember that this list is just a draft that can and probably will change as we gather review-worthy equipment we currently don't have.

⚠️ A MONTH AGO WE ANNOUNCED THAT WE REACHED 2000 YOUTUBE SUBSCRIBERS AND WELL… NOW WE’RE AT 3000! 🙌

Perhaps now it’s the time to give you a better idea about what we’re after in 2025.

Last year we released a series of CBRN equipment reviews and what we didn’t expect was that our videos are now listed as first YouTube search entries. Basically whenever people look for reviews of Avon or MIRA Safety masks for example, they always come across our videos. It’s because the YouTube algorithm evaluates the content of our reviews as more credible in comparison to other, mostly paid promotional stuff.

On one hand, that’s great. On the other hand, what happened is that we made unintended promotion for certain products and as our viewers a.k.a potential buyers take our opinions seriously, a lot of them decide whether to buy or not to buy commercially available respirators based on what we think.

That’s very flattering of course. But we don’t want to promote commercial respirators even if we think highly of them, simply because it feels like we’re shilling. It means we will consider the equipment used in future tutorials and content other that reviews much more carefully.

What we now understand is that most people are interested in one and only aspect when it comes to protective equipment – affordability. Our channel thrives not because of reviews of respirators that cost hundreds of dollars, it’s doing well because of reviews of available and affordable ones.

That’s why in 2025, we will focus mostly on reviews of affordable equipment and improvised makeshift solutions everyone can benefit from. Of course, in case we get in touch with manufacturers of some nice affordable equipment, we will gladly make reviews of the products.

Let's start off New Year's production with a truly unusual video!

This month we decided to take a Czechoslovak Fatra-S gas mask from its original packaging where it was stored for decades in order to take a closer look at this licensed copy of the British Leyland respirator, its history and how it performs during our usual 30 minutes long run. You know, just out of curiosity! This is of course not going to be a regular gas mask review, more like a historical episode with an interesting twist.

Even though this particular piece was made in 1938, the concept of the mask comes from 1920s so yeah, we're talking about a design that's almost 100 years old!

So, what do you say? Excited to see the full video?
