Trying some onions and leeks in grow bags this season.

Bags are filled with our own homemade compost.

My gardener confessionā€¦ fungi and molds make me extremely nervous šŸ˜¬ I like mushrooms as much as the next gnome but encountering them in the wild and not knowing if they are friend or foe is a whole bunch of nope!

While turning the compost I came across this yellow mycelium looking nastiness. My initial reaction was ā€œwell, I guess this is it. Tell my family I love themā€.

After that wore off I did a little googling. Mostly to see what symptoms I would suffer before my premature entrance to the forever sleep.

To my great delight it discovered this is not something that would cause me great suffering then slowly devour my body and soul.

This is called Fugilo septica, commonly known as dog vomit slime mold (who ever came up with that name - straight to jail). šŸ¤¢

It is a safe and natural decomposer in composts. Usually it appears as a slimy transparent mold but turns yellow when fruiting.

Itā€™s just another indication of a diverse and healthy ecosystem thriving in our compost.

What a relief! šŸ˜…

So this is interesting šŸ¤Ø the are alpine strawberry plants that are only a few months old. Started from seeds by first cold stratifying them in the fridge for a couple of monthsā€¦ I might have forgot about them. When I remembered, I mean fully intentionally removed them from the fridge I sowed them into a seedling tray and provided some bottom heat. Giving a light watering weekly and a monthly shot of all purpose fertilizer they are deciding to flower? We still have about 8 weeks before these plants will be planted into the ground.

Itā€™s a common notion that if you are starting strawberries from seed you wonā€™t get a harvest the first season. This causes many people to avoid growing their own strawbs. While it is true that the first years harvest isnā€™t a bumper crop, in my experience planting from seed like this season or planting bare root plants as I have done in previous years has always produced a decent harvest.

If youā€™ve been wanting to grow strawberries but have been discouraged because of reports of delayed harvest I hope this encourages you to give them a try.
