Sad toxic story ahead ⬇️
When I was 10 years old, I had enrolled for an elocution competition - basically I had to recite a speech in front of hundreds of people with confidence. My mom spent months preparing me for this event and after hundreds of practice sessions, I finally went for the D day.
Guess what?
I went up the stage, got stage fright and didn’t speak a single word. My mom expecting me to get 1st place came to pick me up in her car with a bag full of chocolates in the car. My 12 year old sister was the first to complain to my mom about how I shat the bed. My mom gave half the chocolates to my sister and the remaining to my house help’s kids. This day scarred me for life. Since then I went on winning almost every single competition I took a part in.
- 1st in drawing competitions both in school and inter-school level until 5th grade
- 1st in Quiz competitions
- 1st place in Table Tennis bot in school and inter school all the way till 10th grade
- 1st place in 4x100 relay competition
- I was in the top 1% of academics in every semester in every year until 10 the grade.
We could argue that what my mom did was toxic parenting but the world doesn’t really value participation certificate. We only remember the gold medals. The silver medals earn 1/100th of the gold medal winners make coz being first at something is not just marginally better than 2nd. It is several levels above 2nd coz of the sheer amount of hard work, sacrifice, mental agility and endurance that it takes consistently for years if not decades.
I still carry that drive with me even today. If I chill and relax now thinking that I’ve made it in life then I’ll end up becoming the sleeping rabbit while the hard working new blood tortoises surpass me.

I recently hit my 3-year mark as a founder at 1% Club, here are the 8 most invaluable (and often painful) lessons that have shaped me as a leader:
1️⃣ Hiring top employees from other companies isn’t going to solve your problems. Great work happens only with phenomenal direction. That's why a movie with a good script can tank with a bad director.
2️⃣ Remaining calm in tough times is 50% of the job to recover to the good times.
3️⃣ A leader's true character is revealed not in calm waters, but under intense pressure.
4️⃣ There are no perfect decisions. Every choice has tradeoffs that you must accept.
5️⃣ The day you stop being a constant learner; you stop being an effective leader.
6️⃣ Stagnation is the enemy. If you’re not growing you’re dying. This is true not just for employees but even for leaders who usually “allocate” tasks.
7️⃣ Crystal clear communication is the most important skill to master to get work done 2x faster.
8️⃣ Accepting mediocrity breeds more mediocrity. Mediocre work of the weakest employees festers throughout the organisation. Give 2 chances and then eliminate promptly.
These learnings were born from countless setbacks. Looking back, I wouldn't have it any other way. What would you add?
