Tips to Enrich your Paralyzed Dog's Life:
1. Physiotherapy - Physiotherapy is very beneficial to dogs or animals with mobility disabilities. Its relieves stress, pain, pressure and is very good to help with muscle atrophy. Physiotherapy is done by a professional but it can also be done at home. You can do this once or twice a day for about 10-15 mins each (check out out Dobby UNIQIVITIES series to learn some home physiotherapy)
2. A Good Wheelchair - The sooner you get your beloved furry friend a wheelchair the better. It helps their quality of life by not just providing with mobility but also ensuring that their body doesn't have further deformities, this in turn makes their chances of recovery better. Outdoors add years to their life and is a very important part of their wellbeing.
3. Feed them probiotics - Gut health is very important for the immune system of all animals. Paralyzed animals usually face a lot of bloating and gas. To relieve this discomfort add probiotics like Curd/ Yoghurt / buttermilk /Kefir / olive oil / coconut oil / sweet potato / homemade saurkraute / apples to their diet. Note: Always add new food slowly and in small portions and observe.
4. Hygiene & Routine : Hygiene is very important to avoid problems like Urinary tract infections, wounds, bed sores etc. Always keep your animal clean, their bed, bowls etc clean. Invest in some good rubber sheets to help keep their beds dry in case of mishaps. Also a good, fixed routine helps. Routine is also good for your furry animal.
5. Lots of Playtime / Interactive toys / mobility hacks - Set some time aside to play with your dog. If you are busy, use some homemade tricks to make an interactive toy, or buy one. Nourishment popsicles / frozen food trays are a good enriching source of nutrients as well as good for their mind as it stays active.
6. Multiple & short walks - Wheelchair is not made for an animal to be on it for more than 3hrs (max). It can put stress on the body like the shoulder / neck , belly. They cannot sit or lie down while on a wheelchair. So, take your dog out 2 -3 times a day for about the 15mins-30mins. This should give them enough time to get some exercise & mind stimulation
