It’s been a wild year — between work, school, and focusing on my health, I haven’t had as much time to do whiskey reviews as I’d like. Because of that, I didn’t feel right declaring a “Bourbon of the Year” without the full context I usually have. And while I’d love to bring back the Advent Calendar, time just isn’t on my side this season.
But you know me — I couldn’t let the year end without doing something fun, unique, and totally off-the-wall for the whiskey community. So I’ve cooked up something new…
🥁 Introducing the all-new yearly competition: BATTLE OF THE GOATS! 🐐🥃
Here’s how it works:
👉 It’s a two-night livestream event with Ed and me! Most likely Dec 5th and 6th
Night One: Battle of the Worst! – We’ll taste and rank the bottom of the barrel (literally).
Night Two: Battle of the Best! – We’ll crown the GOAT of all GOATs and declare who reigns supreme.
🎖️ How to Enter:
Send in two 4oz samples — one of the worst whiskey you’ve had this year, and one of the best.
We’ll rank them live, and whoever earns the best combined score on Night Two takes home theTraveling GOAT Trophy — a glorious golden goat bust crowned and chained in whiskey glory.
🏆 Rules:
Must be an American whiskey, bourbon, or rye. Finished whiskeys are also acceptable.
You can submit single barrels, store picks, old releases, blends, or even your own custom blend.
Mail your samples to:

Label samples clearly with your name and put what samples are in a sealed envelope

Lance Lyell is the host of Whiskey Tornado and was a finalist in Bardstowns Worlds Top Whiskey Taster contest. Lance is also a Cofounder and Public Affairs Officer for Barrels for Hope, a private charity organization and barrel club that donates over $40K/year to charity organizations focused on cancer, military, children, and mental health. In Lance’s spare time, he hosts private tastings and has helped stores and bourbon clubs select over 50 single barrels from distilleries across the country.
