Over the last several months we've been delving into ancient China! We completed several art and craft projects, cooked up some amazing recipes and, of course, read tons and tons of books!
We've been using Around the World with Picture Books as our spine for Geography and Cultural Studies, but I generally add other pieces to complement or enhance our learning experiences...and this is probably why our unit studies seem to go on for months and months at a time!
We don't really mind that of course. And our kids seem to be enjoying the extra time and absorbing more of the material. But this also means more options when it comes to art and craft projects, book picks and the chance to explore a whole different array of rabbit holes that I would never have seen were I to rush through the subject. Above all though, what I really like is to have flexibility in how we approach a unit study and to be able to swap things off easily that don't jive with us with something else that does!
So, it made sense to add the China unit study from @thistlesandbiscuits, which turned out to be an amazing way to propel us further into our deep dive! Not only are their country unit studies budget-friendly, they're also well thought out, beautifully illustrated and captivating for young ones! Beautiful flashcards, mapwork, copywork, crossword puzzles, coloring pages, interesting and thought-provoking facts were thoroughly enjoyed by both of my kids despite their age differences. And the QR code that takes you directly to a well-curated list of Chinese music on Spotify was definitely a nice touch!
We also thoroughly enjoyed the artist study guide, leading us to pursue one of the oldest continuing traditions in the world: brush painting and calligraphy. With some extra books and art supplies, this became something else entirely...
At long last, we have finally moved on from our China unit study (for now đ) and are looking forward to our next adventure!
And since we're absolutely smitten with Thistles and Biscuits gorgeous country unit studies, rest assured we'll be complementing more of our studies with these.

We had a great time at the museumâs Egypt exhibit! The mummies were a major highlight, but of course, everything was amazing. The kids were really impressed. We spent hours perusing the extensive collection of stunning artefacts. We especially liked the extracts from 'The Book of the Dead', the amulets and the mummified animals: a cat, falcon, snake, crocodile and a fish! Really looking forward to drawing on our visit when we dive into Egypt with History Quest later this year.

If youâve seen our review of the Wooden Balancing Doggies we got through Etsy (https://youtu.be/8egxLfbDYX0), I want to give you an update:
We thought they had such a nice and natural, unvarnished finish â with a woodfire fragrance too! But my kids wanted to paint some and it became a bit of an art project. They ended up painting all but 1 of the 25 pieces!
We used non-toxic water-based acrylic paints and then applied a beeswax coating over the top. The doggies turned out really great, and now the kids are even more excited to play with them!
Painting time + wooden toys = quality playtime!
