La fantasia désigne différents spectacles équestres traditionnels simulant des assauts militaires, pratiqués essentiellement au Maghreb, où elle est souvent appelée « jeu de la poudre » ou « jeu des chevaux ».
Pratique très ancienne, elle prend le plus souvent la forme d’évolutions équestres au cours desquelles des cavaliers, munis de fusils à poudre noire et chevauchant des montures richement harnachées, simulent une charge de cavalerie dont l’apothéose est le tir coordonné d’une salve de leurs armes à feu. Elle peut en outre, selon les régions, être exécutée à dos de dromadaire ou à pied.
Héritière de l’art équestre arabo-turco-berbère, sa pratique est attestée depuis le xvie siècle. Signalée à la fin du xviiie siècle par les témoignages de voyageurs au Maghreb, elle sera formellement connue, et prendra ce nom de fantasia, dès 1832, grâce à Eugène Delacroix et les tableaux qu’il en fait.
