On December 22, 2001, Richard Reid attempted to carry out a terrorist attack on American Airlines Flight 63. Reid, a British citizen, boarded the flight from Paris to Miami wearing shoes packed with explosives. His plan was to detonate the explosives and bring down the plane while it was in mid-air.
Alert passengers and flight attendants became suspicious of Reid's behavior, particularly when they noticed him attempting to light a fuse protruding from his shoe. A struggle ensued, and passengers and crew managed to subdue Reid, preventing a potential catastrophe. The flight was diverted to Boston's Logan International Airport, where Reid was taken into custody by authorities.
The incident prompted increased security measures at airports worldwide, including the implementation of more rigorous screening procedures for passengers' footwear. It also highlighted the need for heightened vigilance in the face of evolving threats to aviation security in the post-9/11 era. Richard Reid later pleaded guilty to attempted murder and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, receiving a life sentence in prison.
