“What are fossils and how do you find them?”

This question, asked by his then 10-year-old daughter in the 1930s, led Sidney Rubidge on a quest to find the answer. He and his daughter went on a picnic in the Karoo Supergroup to look for fossils, and they got lucky and found a skull right away. Turns out the skull was from a 250 million-year-old gorgonopsian (an animal known for its sabre-teeth)!

Sidney Rubidge, Dr. Bruce Rubidge’s grandfather, started collecting more fossils in the area. He became a legend. Over the course of his career, he lived in a tent for 23 years worth of nights, and found so many fossils that led to so many discoveries, and it all had a huge impact on South African paleontology.

Now the Karoo is known for an amazing place to find fossils, from the Triassic and Jurassic, and also well before the #dinosaurs time

Want to learn more? Listen to our chat with Dr. Bruce Rubidge in our recent episode, where he also talks about how people can go on digs today. It’s all in episode 503, “Where Triceratops Lived”

Revisiting a dinosaur of the day: Ornithomimus!

The genus name Ornithomimus means “bird mimic”, and though it refers to its bird-like foot, this #dinosaur looked somewhat ostrich-like

It had a small head with large eyes, a toothless beak, and a long, s-curved neck

If the non-avian #dinosaurs somehow came back into our world, would you be:

A) Excited

or

B) Terrified

(bonus if you tell us in the comments why)

Summertime means field season for paleontologists! And #onthisday in 1965, paleontologist Zofia Kielan-Jaworoska discovered the gigantic arms of a large theropod #dinosaur

Was this bizarre dino so ferocious it could tear apart prey with its hands? Or was there more to the story?

It took about 50 years to solve the mystery and the answer was
different. Instead of being a terrifying animal, Deinocheirus was almost goofy (don’t get us wrong, we love the weird dinosaurs)

It was pretty big, at about 36 ft (11 m) long

But those giant arms weren’t for ripping into prey. They were more like Salad tongs, to scoop up food (plants and fish)

This dino also had a duck like bill, a large tongue, wide hips (to make space for digesting plants, so maybe it was gassy?), short legs, enormous feet, a fan of feathers on its tail, and a hump or sail on its back

Some of the headlines when scientists published an updated paper on Deinocheirus compared this dino to Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars, because it turned out to be so strange

Just another example of why #dinosaurs are so awesome
