The Gospel verse Matthew 19:24 is very well known. In almost all translations it reads as:
“Again I say to you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

In Syriac Peshitta bible this verse reads as:
ܬܘܒ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܕܠܝܠ ܗܘ ܠܓܡܠܐ ܠܡܥܠ ܒܚܪܘܪܐ ܕܡܚܛܐ ܐܘ ܥܬܝܪܐ ܕܢܥܘܠ ܠܡܠܟܘܬܐ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܀
tub deyn omaro L-koon da-dleel u L-gamlo L-me'al ba-hruro da-mhato aw 'atheero d-ne'ul L-malkutho d-Aloho.
The word “gamlo” is translated as camel. In the English translation of the Syriac Peshitta by George Lamsa , he has translated gamlo ܓܡܠܐ as rope . So in the Lamsa Bible this verse reads as:
“Again I say to you, It is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

Other English translations of the Peshitta by John Etheridge and James Murdock has translated it as camel. Also the Late Fr Kaniamparambil Kurian Malpan who translated the Peshitta to Malayalam; [വിശുദ്ധ ഗ്രന്ഥം and has also translated gamlo ܓܡܠܐ as ഒട്ടകം .

The translation of gamlo ܓܡܠܐ as rope by George Lamsa is not widely accepted and is disputed my most scholars. None of the reputed Syriac dictionaries also don't seem to give such a meaning. There are two meanings that most dictionaries give for this word; camel / ഒട്ടകം and rafter / കഴുക്കോൽ.

Any reference to gamlo ܓܡܠܐ as rope that you find on the internet, when you start searching for references ends up with Dr. Lamsa and no other sources. Dr. Lamsa says that a “thick rope” വടം that is used to tie ships to the port are called gamlo ܓܡܠܐ . Also I have not come across any old Syriac literature [be it Christian literature or even secular writings] where the word gamlo / ܓܡܠܐ has been used to mean rope. [If you do find it, please let me know].

The only thing close to it that I have encountered is in the work ܫܪܒܐ ܕܣܗܕܐ ܘܕܩܕܝܫܐ “sharbo d-sohde wad-qadeeshe” [Acts of Martyrs and Saints] . This was printed as a six volume book by Paul Bedjan in Paris in 1896 and the printed work is know by its Latin name "acta martyrum et sanctorum"
In volume 6 of that work on page 588 ; in the 8th line you see a line that reads:
ܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܗܘܐ ܕܝܢ ܐܘܼܪܟܹܗ ܕܗܝܟܠܐ ܬܠܬܝܢ ܓܲܡܠܝܼ̈ܢ܃ ܘܲܦܬܼܵܝܹܗ ܥܣܪܝܢ ܐܡܝ̈ܢ
Eethaw hwo deyn urkoh d-hayklo thlotheen gamleen w-ftheeh ‘esreen ameen.
Translated this means: “the length of the hall was thirty yards and its width twenty cubits.” archive.org/details/ActaMartyrumEtSanctorumvolume6…

Here you can see the word ܓܡܠܝܢ “gamleen” used in the plural form as a unit of measure. Aka yards or say meters. So the singular gamlo / ܓܡܠܐ can be translated as “yard” or “one meter”. So in my opinion “a yard” is probably an even better translation than “a rope”.
So Matthew 19:24 should be translated as :
"Again I say to you, It is easier for a yard to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. "

And for me that makes more sense than "camel" or "a thick rope" വടം . It is almost impossible for a camel to go thru the eye of a needle. Similarly it is impossible for a "thick rope" വടം to go thru the eye of a needle. But it is possible for a thread to go thru the eye of a needle. The shorter the thread it goes thru the eye and out quickly. The longer the thread it takes longer to go thru the eye and out . So for a rich man ... its going to take long time. Like pulling one meter long thread thru the eye of a needle.

What do you think ?
