Here's a helpful chart to understand what each color compound does while polishing a golf club. At its core, all we're doing here is taking (and making) uniform scratches in the surface that gradually get smaller and smaller until we can't see them any more. The finer you go, the shinier it gets. Progressing from left to right in your polishing is how you accomplish this.
