🫣Okay, after my “wine smelling” picture on my instagram stories, I got questions about HOW I taste a wine in a restaurant... So, here it is 👇🏽

@angelaoosterling

🚨Let me start by saying that I’m not a wine expert (only food, hospitality & fitness lol 👀), BUT during my 10+ years working in hospitality I’ve had the honor of learning from a few amazing sommeliers and many wine tastings. ⭐️

AND 3 very helpful tips that helped me when I was a beginner wine taster were these below, BUT…

🚨…the BIGGEST tip I can give you is this: Search for what’s WRONG with the wine FIRST!

1️⃣APPEARANCE: BEFORE you start tasting: hold the glass at the stem - look at it and make sure there are no particles in your wine.

2️⃣SMELL: Swirl the glass - place 2 fingers on the bottom of the glass: this helps separate the aromas in the wine

Bring glass to your nose and SMELL - YOU ARE NOT smelling if it smells good, you’re smelling to make sure there isn’t something WRONG with your wine!

🚦You can smell something is WRONG with the wine if it smells like wet dirty oxidized card board and/or acid nail polish remover.

3️⃣TASTE: ONLY if you smell your wine is GOOD, you can start sipping and actually tasting the wine.
Sometimes you use “tasting” to wine, as an extra check and confirm the wine in no good.
Optional: add some oxygen if you want by inhaling some air into the wine in the mouth. Oxygen plays and important roll, because it helps release the more complex components. Sometimes is best to let the wine “breathe” before drinking

🚨 HOSPITALITY TIP: I usually wait until everyone at the table has their wine before I start drinking. I give the sommelier the go-ahead, so she/he can start pouring the wine. We toast, and only after that I start tasting.

Hope this helps!

👇🏽IMPORTANT! The moments I choose to share are only part of my reality.

I also experience heavy setbacks, struggles and get overwhelmed with doubts and anxiety.

Please don't compare your life to the highlight reel of others on social media.
It will take you down even further when you’re already feeling like 💩

Remember that failure and struggle are a natural part of life, and that EVERYONE faces challenges. You are not alone ♥️

Through my own experiences, I've learned that failure and setbacks CAN lead to growth through valuable lessons, and sometimes the “growth part” can come from simply outlasting the pain and darkness… ⭕️

👉🏽Here are some tips for when you’re feeling uncomfortable, sad, anxious:
1. Stop what you’re doing - take a break (being productive is not important when you’re having an anxiety attack)
2. Stop scrolling on social media
3. Breath through your belly to normalize your breathing a bit
4. Call a friend, family member, any loved one
5. Walk (or move through exercising)
6. OPTIONAL: ONLY IF YOU’RE FEELING BETTER can you then try to cross off one minor task from your to-do list for today.

And most importantly, please don't let failure or setbacks define you - you are not your failures! - you are not your setbacks!…and what you’re feeling right now is normal and it WILL PASS. I promise.

♥️You are doing the best you can and you are doing better than you think you are. Trust me.

🥹PS: I haven’t had an anxiety attack in ages, but today I had a harsh one. Thank you for reading this. I hope it can help you.❤️
