1. NOT learning with English definitions

As a non-native speaker myself, I understand that your first instinct when you see a new word is to search for its meaning in a language that you are most comfortable with, e.g., your mother tongue. But IT IS NOT WHAT YOU SHOULD DO, unfortunately!

I used to learn vocabulary this way until I realized that I understood many words didn't have the exact translations in my mother tongue. So, learning new words in my language just made it more difficult for me to use them later.

2. NOT learning with contexts

This is why learning lists of words is a waste of time.

In order to remember and able to use the words in the future, you need to learn them in the right contexts in which you see them in the first place, such in the a paragraph of an IELTS Writing Sample.

Learning words without contexts is like your teacher telling you to write them down but never checking if you actually understand them.

"Thanks to" and "due to" may be used to signify reasons but one is primarily used in a positive manner, the other one in a negative manner. Guess which is which and reply in the comment section.

3. NOT learning with examples

You may be able to remember the words you learned yesterday or three days ago. But how are you going to make sure you will remember them next month? And will you be able to use them in your future writing and speaking?

Not learning with examples (both reading examples and making examples) is like reading a cooking recipe but never actually try it out. You may vaguely remember that you know a recipe but you won't be able to cook that dish.

So, what is the point of knowing that you know a recipe but you can't even remember the details, let alone making the dish?
