What is the differnce between graphite and graphene?
Both graphite and graphene are forms of carbon but they are different in the structure.
Graphite consists of 3D structure composed of hexagonal carbon layers. These layers are connected together by vander walls bonds which are weak bonds, leading to low shear strength between the layers and thereby these layers can slide over each other easily (at low stresses). That is why graphite is a good lubricant material. Conversly, the carbon atoms in each layer are connected together by covalent bonds which are very strong. So the strength of graphite is high in the layer direction. To conclude, graphite is anisotropic material as it's properties depend on the loading direction.
Graphene is simply a 2D material where the layers of graphite are separated by various mechanical, physical, and chemical means. Due to it's 2D structure, graphene is one of the most strong materials all over the earth.
