Happy New Year everyone! ✨
Living in both Tokyo and Hawaii, I wanted to share just a few of the New Years differences between Japanese 🇯🇵 & Japanese-Americans (~3rd-5th gen in Hawaii) 🇯🇵🇺🇸 that I’ve noticed:
1️⃣ Nishime:
Hawaii’s usually incorporates chicken into the dish. Japan’s doesn’t and often contains vegetables cut into special shapes. Hawaii’s is more like chikuzenni, a dish from Kyushu that’s eaten in more everyday type of meals.
2️⃣ Namasu:
Hawaii’s typically has daikon, carrots and cucumber. Japan’s doesn’t have cucumber as that takes away from it being special for the occasion. Japanese New Years colors are red and white, and carrots with a reddish tone are sold in Japan during this time.
3️⃣ Kadomatsu:
In Hawaii, many display the bamboo decoration in the house. In much of Japan, it’s more common for businesses to have it than it is homes. It’s also displayed outside as it is to welcome a deity in to bring good fortune.
Also, in this particular Hawaii kadomatsu photo, there are cherry blossom accents which may seem Japanese, but are from the spring season. Japanese culture pays a lot of attention to seasons, and while it’s nice, this one mixes two seasons together.
Have you had any of these for New Years?
Best wishes for 2025, and thank you for tuning into my videos sometimes! 🙌

Some photos I took while exploring the boutiques, cafes and shopping in the trendy area of Hannam. I talked about it in my video, but it has somewhat of a Daikanyama or Aoyama vibe to it, just a bit less “pretty”, speaking in Tokyo terms. There are definitely some cool spaces here.l to check out if you visit Seoul.

Celebrating 3 years later ✨
As some of you know, we officially got married in 2020 but had put off having a celebration. This past September, we were able to have an amazing party with, friends and loved ones coming together in Honolulu from near and far. It was such a blast and we loved spending the evening with all who were able to come! Thank you! 🙏
* I’ll post a blog on my site later about everyone we worked with in order to throw a non-traditional wedding party in Honolulu with international guests if you’re interested.

I’m glad I could be back in Japan this spring 🌸
It’s been a lot of grinding and trying to get things done, so I haven’t had much time to do much in Tokyo. Hopefully I’ll be able to share at least some good news with you when things settle down!
Until then, enjoy a few cherry blossom photos I was able to take the other day 📸

I’ve realized over the past several months that if you move home after living abroad for a while, you’re kind of an immigrant in a lot of ways.
Here are some of the challenges that I think could anyone planning to live abroad and return back to the US could face 🛬🇺🇸

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thank you for tuning in over the past year, I really appreciate it! 😊
What’s in store for 2023?
I do plan to be in Japan within the next few months for a bit to hopefully do something big that I’ve never done before. Stay tuned for that. But honestly, I don’t have a whole lot figured out yet, I’m still feeling things out and going through adjustments. I’ll update as things come.
I hope your holiday season has been a happy one and wish you all best in 2023!
あけおめ!今年もよろしくお願いします!✨

Ever had to do these kinds of ID checks? 😅
In my https://youtu.be/_6gqSkh7HnQ video, I discuss a few struggles I’ve been having since leaving Japan.
Like not being able to access money.
If you live in Japan or are planning to, these are things you should know when it comes to moving back. And if you’re not, you might learn some things about Japan that you never knew.

This is everything about my 1-bedroom apartment in Tokyo: https://youtu.be/Z-Pc-el1ZWI
I was moving out so I didn’t hold anything back. You could literally find the building and ring the buzzer if you wanted to lol.
If you haven’t watched it yet, I show:
- The area/station because it’s a huge factor
- The apartment building from mail room to trash room
- My apartment from bedroom to fire escape
But yes, to update you, I have moved now. I do have a couple more Japan videos coming up though, so don’t be surprised! Hope you’ll watch them 😊
